How do you know when your clowns are getting.....

I think my percs are getting togather... the one goes in a out of these caves I've made for them and twitches really fast. Can someone give me some insight to how you can tell your clowns are getting busy?

Clowns exhibit mating behavior by shaking and displaying to each other. Sounds like that is what you have going on. It’s likely they will not spawn until they reach sexual maturity around 1 1/2 years of age or older. What you are witnessing can be correlated to teen courtship. They often spawn in the DT but saving the offspring is impossible under those circumstances.

Well of course, if you had explained that above, my answer would have been slightly different.

even in a display if you have the will there is a way!!! First off you'll want to search around the internet for some good references to see what your getting into, theres a good howto that I stumbled across a long time ago that i'll see if I can dig up and link for you later. Bear in mind that raising clownfish fry is a lot of work and will require rotifers, brine shrimp, and a ton of manual water changes in a smaller tank (10 gallon works great).

As far as collection, let your clowns lay eggs and have a few successful hatches to not only make sure they are viable (the first few clutches typically arent) but also to get the timing down. Most clowns will lay eggs about every 14 days with a hatch occuring about 6-8 days after eggs have been laid. Once you figure it you you'll know when your eggs will hatch (be ready a day before or a day after the target day just in case though!)

once you get that down, when the eggs hatch you can cut your pumps and use a larval snagger over the course of an hour or so to capture as much of the fry as possible. While it's more difficult this way and you will never get as much fry as you would with the traditional method (having the clowns lay eggs on a pot then removing the pot and eggs) it does work!

You can build a larval snagger pretty easily like this:

Budget Larval Snagger (diy in progress) | copepodgeek.com

After that, it's a matter of trying and trying and trying until you can successfully raise the little guys. As a footnote if you do build the snagger I've detailed, avoid using a red LED, go with blue, white, or yellow as it's more attractive to the fry.

in edit, not quite the howto I was looking for but it's along the same lines:

Thanks Rob, what is everyone talking bout...you never write on your own site or what??? I got it to work but no video just sound, probably something wrong w/my comp. I'll give it a shot, I thought breeding freshwater was a pain..the good thing is that the tank they are in is an old refugium turned into a 2nd DT, it has a 1" feed pipe from the MDT, so I can just shut it off and cut the tank off from everything then turn it back on. Great site, cool concept, keep up the good work. Took a while but I got someok shots...they never stop moving damnit!!

Forget trying to take a pic of him though. He’s as elusive as Santa Claus around here. He’s a really nice guy if you get the chance to know him. BUT, Santa has nicer stocking stuffers.
