Playing with camera settings while on vacation

Yup, lengthy title explains it all.

While in Atlanta I had this spectacular view of downtown from my hotel balcony...

...well, the view got better when it started to get darker...and I started playing around with my exposure settings.

here's some pics of different exposure settings f-stops and exposure lengths. pretty much I put the camera on a small tripod and had it pointed out between the bars of the hand railing. I then put the camera in aperture priority mode and played with the aperture settings. Some of the pics I think look pretty cool...hope you enjoy.

They look good enough to be postcards. Did you Photoshop them at all?

I think I may have done an Auto Level on one of the pics, but they are pretty much right off the camera.

I really like the last one and how the lights just light that tower up.

The first pic was taken at 8:47am, the rest were taken between 9:10pm and 9:11pm. I think my camera was still on central time, so the local Atlanta time was an hour later.

Oh, I did reduce their size....the originals were either 1600x1200 or 2272x1704 (I think the last 4 were all the larger size), these are only 500x375.

Cool shots Scott! I need to find time to do stuff like that with my new toy. All my free time seems to go to cruising here! :-)

Thanks for the nice words. After the podcast on photography, got me wanting to play with some of the "fancy" stuff like fixed aperture.

Sort of brought back memories with my 35mm SLR in the front yard with the yard light turned off, back in high school. Nice and black, put the camera on a tripod...lock it open while focused on the North star....come back in 30min to release it. Somewhere I have two pretty neat pics of that night...with the stars starting to circle the North star. Even had a plane fly through on one of them....made for some interesting results.

So, thought I'd see what mess I could get myself into with the digital camera while on vacation. The nice thing about these digital cameras, you can see the results right away. Plus, all the info is recorded into the image file via EXIF like the aperture, shutter speed, etc.

maybe I'll fiddle with one or two in Photoshop and see what kind of "postcard" I can come up with. LOL
