Hi all,
It's been awhile, but I thought I'd pop by and see how everyone is doing. I hope everyone is doing well.
I also wanted to let you all know that our new LIONFISH CARE GUIDE just went...
I admittedly skimmed this thread (I'm at work), so if this has been answered, please excuse me. The critter in question isn't a sponge, it's a tunicate.
To be honest, the fish we keep are about a docile and tame as they come as long as you don't fit into their mouth (true of most fish) or accidentally put your hand on them.
They really don't...
If you just go at the stuff in a wholesale manner, you're likely going to end up with another problem with either cyano, diatoms, or dinoflagellates. All of that nuisance algae is feeding on...
I'm glad you clown has laid off, but it always surprises me when peeps wonder why they get bitten by their clownfish after they get a bit of age and size on them...they are, after all, nothing but...
I didn't know we had to respond in the thread here. I tend to try not to clutter up threads, but it doesn't mean I don't read them.
Washer, no detergent. Been doing it for years. If you like them white, add a bit of bleach. Wash them inside-out.
I know this is a bit late, but crabs of ANY kind will kill and eat zots. Also, with zots, if you don't go with a sterile-type setup, you really need to watch out for hydroid blooms due to the high...
Yikes...I've been out f circulation for awhile, but I had a PM from Carmie so I hopped on over. How is the Janss' ?
It really looks like a bacterial infection to me, and Maracyn2 is the current...
Another thing that may be happening is your skimmer is sensitive to water level, and it may be adjusted to the old level, and requires readjustment to the new water level. I turn our skimmer "down",...
Most macro will do well with plain ol' shop lighting. If you want to dial the lighting in a bit more, bet a tube that is around 5500-6500 K (color temp), as macro favors the red end of the spectrum....
Not to mention that OR has been known to be prone to exaggeration when it suits them...
It's hard to tell from the pic, but it's probably Actinodiscus sp. based on the radial lines, but it could be Discosoma sp.. Either way, it's safe...Can you get a better pic?
I concur...definitely a Nassarius sp., most likely N. vibex.
Give the fish some time and it will eventually be an "in your face" type of fish. This behavior is typical of foxfaces.
It's normal, especially for a new acquisition.
As you find things in your tank, you might want to use this pictorial ID guide to help you ID them and let you know if they're "keepers" or not:
Hitchhiker ID Guide
A good way to get a lot a 'hikers out of your LR is to give it a 10 min hypersalinity bath (SG 1.040). It's easier on the LR than club soda and most critters will vacate the rock. At that point,...
Great link Carmie...I've been CPR certified for several years and this is definitely a great thing to know.
Just wait...cute little kids turn into TEENAGERS and beyond!
I simply sit prospective BF's down while I'm cleaning my .45 and say..."Ya know...if anyone ever hurt my daughter, I doubt that...
Late reply, but as Carmie mentioned, one of the Anthias is becoming a secondary male (assuming you have 3 females). We had a "she-he" lyretail (Pseudanthias squamapinnis) for about 8 years, and it...
Reeflo makes several nice pumps, and I'd say with that amount of head, you'll need a Barracuda (as a minimum), which will put out about 2250 gph at 14' of head. I highly recommend running...
Just to weigh in on this issue, to be honest, lionfish are one of the most mis-ID'd groups of fish in the hobby. Renee and I field tons of questions regarding species ID, be it "after the purchase"...
One of the smaller filefish species (such as Acreicthys tomentosus), a small scorp (Scorpaenodes sp.) or stingfish (Choridactylus multibarbus), any of the waspfish (Ablabys or Paracentropogon sp.),...
It's an appie (Aiptasia 'nem)...nuke it while you can.
Make a thin paste of pickling lime or Ca and water and use an eyedropper to squirt a little in front of the critter...it should ingest it. ...
You mention that the tank is drilled...does it have an overflow installed (corner, central, external), or do you simply have a tank with a couple of holes in it? Also, I'm thinking that the holes...
From what i can see, it resembles Pusiostoma (Emgina) mendicaria, but i think it's likely something else.
Ron Shimek wrote a nice article on whelks HERE that may be of help in ID-ing it. You...
I'm trying to avoid any accidental envenomations, thank you very much...it took me 15 years before I got popped by that BW, but I'd like to keep my record clear of any hits from the fish we keep. <_<
It appears to be a whelk of some type. For ID purposes, it would be best to remove it from the water and shoot a top-down pic, a side-view pic, and most importantly, a pic of its underside showing...
Hey all,
I managed to check in here (we've been working on the new house, and thus, have been scarce). I'll hit Renee up when I get home tonight.
I'm curious as to why Wes is recommending a larger ID "so a true-union ball valve can be used". I have 1" TUBV's in a few spots on our 100 gal setup. To be honest, I am a HUGE fan of them.
As...
take a look in this pictorial ID guide and see if you can match it up with anything. i'd guess Munnid isopod from the description you give.
LL Hitchhiker ID guide
i had to chase the link down (Renee hasn't given it a face lift and linked it to Lionfish Lair yet), but here it is:

Frank Marini has a really nice new book coming out in June entitled Lionfish and Other Scorpionfish, and if you see it, you may notice some very familiar fish not only on many of its pages, but on...
it's kinda after the fact, but i can tell you the eggs were not Nerite eggs. Nerite eggs are actually pretty large, and are laid singulary, like Columbellid eggs.

i usually wait until the tank is cycled before adding macro.
as mentioned, the reason is that live macro will use the NH3 as food, which is counterproductive at this point, as the NH3 serves to...
actually, shedding a cuticle is perfectly normal for lions and most other scorpionfish. due to their sedentary nature, this helps the fish rid themselves of algae, detritus, ectoparasites, etc. that...
ah...thanks Dick. i suspected as much...it's that "common name" thing again. i run into that all the time as a scorp-keeper...very few fish are properly ID'd and many share common names, so the use...
Dick,
are we talking about the same snail here? i'm referring to Norrisia norrisii, which usually comes from Mexican waters, hence the temperate lable. They inhabit kelp forests (in fact, one of...
moon snails are a temperate water snail that are extremely short-lived at temps above 68*F. not a good fit unless you're running a cool water tank.
did you cycle the tank? just using old water basically does nothing but add whatever pollutants have built up in the source tank. the bacteria you culture in a cycled tank is NOT waterborne. the...
this fish is often confused with P. antennata, however, this fish was ID'd as P. miles, which is WAY off the mark. it's a smaller medium-bodied lion (7"-8") from the coast of Africa. unlike most...
it probably thought it was food since Renee was in front of the tank to take some pix, but it just looked.
"i wonder how escargot tastes..."

Michael,
i've always wondered...say i wanted to get some ink done of a particular fish. how tuff is that to do? would i bring in a pic and the artist would do sketches or what? as you know,...
getting rid of the CPR-type overflow is the best way to eliminate the pump. get yourself a U-tube type.
you're going to have a problem adding anything to a tank that small with an established clarkii in residence. the newby will likely never get a chance to settle in. it might work if you totally...

it's kind of a "rule of thumb" for chillers...obviously, some are "worse" than others, but most mfrs don't come right out and tell you how much head a chiller adds to your setup, altho if you can get...
one thing to consider is that your chiller will add roughly 6 feet of head to your setup, so make sure you account for that (i'm running six chillers ATM, so i've plumbed my share of them). ...
