My birdsnest that had been growing so well took a tumble after I left for the day yesterday. It was on my brain when I came in this morning. I'm not sure if it was the brain or the anemone, but I...
I didn't do any sort of complex formula. The 12 LED kit from Rapid LED fit the opening in the eurobracing very nicely, and I knew 12 diodes would be more than enough light to keep whatever I wanted.
Added a few more small frags from home, and the last of the intended livestock,

I never could get my old 150 back in balance. I ended up tearing it down and selling off the tank. I bleached and then re-cured the rock and set up a 90 in it's place.
Amongst some of the stuff I brought in to try under the LEDs were some SPS frags I had as a result of getting a little overzealous cleaning the big tank at home. While there was plenty of flow in the...
Despite the fact that I used well established sand and rock that was all transported underwater, I opted to let the tank sit empty for about 3 weeks. I never detected any signs of a cycle, but I...
Upon starting my new job back in January, one of the first things I did was ask if I could set up a small tank in my office. After getting the 'thumbs up' from the boss-man, I set to work. While I...
Glad to see you're still alive and kicking V :)
Hello everybody. It's been a while.
I apologize for my absence. I was laid off from my job back in November, after 10 years of busting my a$$ for the same firm. I was amazed at how busy being...
That looks like a pretty normal reaction to being stung. I've seen the same on clowns who decide to host in things like zoas and hammer corals. Doesn't seem to bother the clowns a bit, and they do...
Well, we're sure glad you're still around :)
What a horrible, horrible thing, but it looks like you have the right outlook on it!
Wow, they sure do seem to have come a long way as far as quality in the last few years. AFAIK, it's still Chinese made stuff, but the quality seems to be much improved over the junk they were selling...
All of the T5 reflectors I'm aware of will be too wide to fit, and cutting them will indeed defeat the purpose of having them :(
It looks like they have individual reflectors, which is good. Anything on the first 2 rows of corals would probably be OK under that fixture. Honestly, I'd add another set of 2 bulbs sooner rather...
Ok, well, you'll probably get something of a nitrate spike by disturbing a sand bed that deep, but other than that, I wouldn't expect too many problems.
Wow, those are some fantastic pictures!
The "Watts per gallon" rule isn't really very helpful, given the wide variety of lighting tech out there today. Do the T5 bulbs have a reflector for each bulb, or one big reflector for both? If...
Was everything housed in another tank while you repaired this one? What exactly are you moving back in? If sand and rock were dry, or not kept in good conditions (circulation, temp, salinity) expect...
Mine split occasionally, though I know people do cut them up, like mushrooms and rics with no apparent harm.
Very, very nice. Once it has split a few times, let me know if you'd consider selling a clone.
A double whammy of my own personal stupidity and mother nature. A couple of months ago we went on a week long trip to Knoxville to visit my Sister-In-Law and my new niece. Everything was fine when we...
A picture or diagram of the setup might help. What pump are you using. Salt creep usually means a leak somewhere, so that's worth investigating. Pinhole leaks are going to be at joints, so you can...
I agree with the above. The only way a pump should produce bubbles is if it's cavitating, it has a venturi (for intentionaly creating bubbles) or if it's external and the intake plumbing has a...

Both the stars and worms are detritivores, and, generally speaking, helpful to have around. Populations of both will fluctuate with the availability of food. I understand keeping ponies can be a...
I've never seen clowns react that way, but if the only thing that changed was the light, I don't think I'd worry too much.
Just like mixing any 2 dissimilar anemones, you run the risk or chemical or physical warfare if they get too close.
Holy Cow! That is amazingly impressive! I've seen a few plywood builds, but nothing of this scale. I may have missed it, but what's the volume on that thing?
I fed mine mysis, but it would regularly catch whatever i happened to be feeding the tank, including pellet and flake. i eventualy stopped target feeding them because they did a fine job fending for...
I agree that you'll want to start it in a lower light area, but I have come to understand that they can actually take quite a bit of light if acclimated slowly. I have rics in the top half of my 150...
Mine always hung out on the rock.
What size is your main tank, and what do you have in it (fish, inverts, cleanup crew, etc). I think we can look at a couple of things here already. Your nitrates are high, and that's contributing...
You can ID a lot of stuff here:

It's important to make sure the tank goes through a cycle because that ensures nitrifying bacteria are established in the tank....
It's possible then that you won't have much of a spike. it's also possible it's just too early. I'd wait another week, testing every day. If you still havent seen a spike by then, then i think I'd...
LOL, thanks. The truth is, if I didn't get great deals, I wouldn't ever get anything at all :) I reef on a SERIOUS budget!
In reality, the credit must go to my local reef club. Besides the...
The brown is almost certainly a diatom bloom. Perfectly normal, and will go away on its own in a week or so. Where did your rock and sand come from? Depending on the answer, you may not have gotten...
If you turn off the lights to kill the algae, it's just going to come back when you turn them back on. I'm sure the huge increase in lighting is whats causing it to grow faster that it was before....
It depends on the ballast and wiring of whatever fixture you get. Some will not function without all the bulbs in place. Many fixtures will have multiple cords or switches though, so if you get one...
Not QUITE free, but not far from it.
See what LA wants for one here:

I paid $20 :)
The Viper fixtures are junk IMO. Go for the 4x24. I had a 4x24 over a 15 and it was definitely NOT overkill, especially if you only have 2 daylight bulbs (and presumably 2 actinics).
Time for an update. I upgraded the MH to a 250w and added 2x24w actinic T5s. I moved the maroons out of the 150 some time ago, and just picked up a beautiful blue haddoni carpet this weekend.

I think you'll find some buyers in the $20-$35 range. You may wish to leave some negotiation room though.
The prices you listed are in line for retail around here as well, but I can pick up neon hydno frags at our local swaps for $10 all day long.
I had several mini carpets in my 55 zoa/anemone tank. They're pretty easy to care for, and didn't move around too much. They never came in contact with anything that I can remember, but seeing as...
Well, I see problems with both units. The one at Foster and Smith is only RO, there's no DI. You can get an add-on DI stage, and I wouldn't use that unit without one. The one on ebay lacks a pressure...
Nice catch Dick. Let's see what they have to say.
I had a full size voltans in my 120 reef for well over a year. Most of the fish were to big for him to make a meal of, and the ones that weren't...
That would be a baby aptasia. Kill it. Kill it now.
A pic would definitely help, but if you find it unattractive, you can definitely manually remove the algae with your fingers, tweezers, whatever.
You're quite welcome. I hope it stays gone for you :)
There's no need to remove the fish to use ChemiClean and the like.
