wow yall have alot of experience with diff. sp. of seahorses.....
Does anyone have experience with dwarf seahorses(Hippocampus zosterae)?
i personally find them facinating i would love to keep them someday when i can give them all the time and effort they need and my knowlege base catches up to my ambitions along with my skills... anyways I would like to put out there if there are any significant differences n dealling with the different species based on experience and not simply what an artical says.
but seahorses i way cool and majestic i listen to the seahorse podcast all the time its one of my little ambitions to deal with someday.i looked at seahorse.org. too are there any recomended books out there i can read?

The Org has a good library section and can recommend some books.
I used to have dwarves as a kid, but didn't know much about them. They did well, reproducing and keeping me into horses for some time. BUT.. back then, I had all the time in the world to raise brine shrimp for them. That is the only reason I don't try to keep them today. I do enough cultures when I have seahorse fry. I enjoy taking a break from hatching from time to time
they require live BBS twice a day (every day), very low flow (even lower than large species SH), and small tanx (10 gal or less) due to the feeding density necessary for them (they're very sedentary, and literally just wait for the food to swim by).
they also require a sterile setup as the BBS tends to cause outbreaks of hydroids which can, and will kill the zots. some folks are using LR and macro for their setups, but it needs to be treated with Panacur, which will kill most inverts forever.
so...if you want to take all the necessary precautions and hatch BBS twice a day, zots may be for you.
also, they have shorter lifespans than larger species SH...about 6 mos to 1.5 years.
there's a good book by Alissa Abbot dedicated to zots, The Complete Guide to Dwarf Seahorses in the Home Aquarium.
Yeah... um...Greg..do you know Alissa perhaps? I'd (and Rob) like to speak with her about something?
D
why what EVER do you mean?
actually, i don't know her, altho she's an org member. Renee and i don't really travel in zot circles. i can ask a couple of folks who might know how to get a handle on her.
She would be a perfect person to help us round out our seahorse series and Rob is quite busy. If anyone would ask her if she's interested in a fun, casual conversation, that'd be great.
Sorry, I don't know her either.... she's a member on the Org but rarely frequents the site that I know of. I know zilth about zots except their care is way to much like fry for me to want to do it on a regular basis.
