RK/RC Spiral

Hey all,

I know TR tracks happenings at RK magazine, and RC by association, so I thought I may bring to light an interesting thread (dare I say rant) by industry authors, most notably Steven Pro, Eric Borneman, Sanjay Joshi, Frank Marini, Mike G(?), and Brian Plankis who are having considerable difficulties getting compensated for article submissions. Some authors have stated that they will not be writing for RK again.

That is an interesting read. Thanks Scott. I was nearly banned from RC twice while trying to save their members from making a financial mistake on equipment. It wasn't even directed toward my site because I didn't handle the equipment. After strike two and with all the flaming going on over there, I decided to walk away rather than have them ban me. I seldom go over to RC, unless some one here refers us to a particular thread and I never post on RC. I'm done with their BS.

I like TR!!!

RC can be like too many aggressive fish in a small tank.

I became a premium RC member because I appreciated the depth of RC, from the experts who frequent(ed) there to the sponsors who have support forums. Lately however, the site seems plagued with performance delays and feature malfunctions, almost as if the site is collapsing under its own weight. Most of these problems might be attributed to excessive growth, and now they are going to have to figure out how to manage these issues when the situation is most unwieldy.

Also, as you have inferred, some RC policies are quite unfriendly and unrelenting. For example, I tried to direct a person to a helpful NR thread about a DIY custom screen mesh, and the site wouldn't let me link to NR. It just re-inserted a RC link in its place! Perhaps this is spelled out in their member policies, but it just does not seem to maintain the great altruistic spirit of this hobby.

This thread about authors not getting paid could be the final blow for me.

I agre. the only reasonI go to RC is because it's where my local club's forum is. I raely stray from there, and even less often do I poist outside of that forum. It's beyond me why anyone would be a RC "premium" member. What exactly do yuo get for your payments again?

For me, the most practical reason was to have unrestricted access to the search engine. Without premium membership, you are largely locked out of search engine access (via flood control?) during the weekdays. Sounds pretty silly, but when I was doing initial research for my 55g I wanted to use the search tool quite a bit. Besides, I thought it was good to support the RC community even though it has proved not to be nearly as friendly and open like TR.

I have found that using Google's site search function is really useful. In the Google search box type site: followed by the address and the term you are searching for. There is no space between the colon and www but there is between the .com (or whatever the extension is) and the term.

Using google does not have the same results as the RC search engine, but the searches are in a fraction of the time it takes the beleaguered RC engine to post results.

For example, doing a Google "site:reefkeeping.com refugium AND macro" has 1,470 results in 0.05 seconds, while the RC engine ("refugium AND macro", set to "Any Date") posts 38954 threads in ~15 seconds.

Not nearly as many results, but worth some exploration...
