Flow

Ok guys and gals

Well it finally has happened
I'm not happy with my flow anymore and I think my sps's aren't either
What I have right now is this; Wave2k wavebox(they say it creates 4400 gph,but I don't think so), and 3 maxi-jet 1200's

Now this is what I'm thinking 4 maxi-jets with the sureflow mod(1600 gph per headhttp://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=AF-SF1600&Category_Code=Maxijet) and put these on a wavemaster prohttp://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=AF-SF1600&Category_Code=Maxijet. I would put 2 ph's on each side of tank.

What do you guys think??????

Mike

i would just go with 2 Koralia #4's (on the back of the tank aimed at the center of the front glass) and 2 Kolralia #2's (on the front sides aimed at the rear center of the glass). should be crazy flow and make everything happy. you could do this for under $200.

or you could just go with the #4's and your return, but keep in mind that i (not to be cocky or anything) have almost 6000gph (5990gph) in my 125 incuding the return (not all goes through the sump though (only about 1200gph goes through the sump).

Thank you for responding so fast!!!
The reason why I talk about the maxi mods is first it produces at least the same if a little more flow than the #4's and second I already have the maxi's and my wife would flip out if I stopped using them.
I have been put on a budget with my reef and I need to be as fruggle as possible. But I don;t want to be too cheap because I believe in the old saying "you pay for what you get!"

Are you familar with the maxi mod I'm looking at?? Are you running a wavemaker on yours, or are you letting the flow go full blast all the time????

I do like your idea as far as the location goes!!!

CRAZY FLOW is WHAT I'm looking for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Take a look at the sureflow 1600's and let me know what you think?!!

Thanks Bobby

Mike

Mike, i just searched the sure flow 1600's and here is my opinion. if they live up to what the sites are saying LET ME KNOW SO I CAN GET A COUPLE !! lol

they sound like a great investment. i have a modded MJ 1200 and IMHO ... it does not touch my Koralias in the flow department. hopefully these mods work better and i can order a few to add a little MORE flow to my 125.keep in mind that if you set the mods to turn completely off ... they usually start back up in the reverse direction. i know that when i triped my breaker a few times ... i had to unplug the mod and plug it back in to get it spinning in the right direction.

On/off wave makers don't work so well on these prop pumps. They tend to stop starting. With the wide openings fish are able to swim in. Not so good when the pump starts back up.

I am going to order a few of the sureflow mods. I have a few Maxi Jets sitting around since I replaced them with the Koralia's. The mods look very nice. To bad they are black and not Maxi Jet gray.

I wanted to let you guys know that my three modded mj's have been on a wavemaker now for about 2 monthes with no ill effects. The GS2's have a prop stop on the end that corrects the mod if/when it starts up in the wrong direction. Works great. no complaints

Wow, if they work then more power to you. I disconnected one mod when it started clacking and vibrating rather than moving water, but the other one still looks good.

I am a huge fan of the koralias though!

I personally use a koralia in my 46g bow front and it has worked great. I will probably continue to use it when I set up my 190g but I am also planning a closed loop. A person can get a pump for not to much and just plumb it up for great flow.

Great discussion. I just recetly re-did my flow in my 210 gal display tank. I have three Koralia#3's, two asymetrically on each side wall and one in the middle back aiming forward. I also have two VorTech's, one on each side (positioned towards the front), aiming at each other, and regulated by their own wireless system that speeds them up and down in an irregular fashion. I also have a lone MaxiJet 1200 on all the time at the bottom right back wall. The VorTechs speed up and down without any noticable noise. I have never had good luck with either Koralias or MaxiJets on wavemeakers, because they clank and rattle. The Maxi's start off quiet but soon develop that clunking noise, which scares the heck out of my fish. I really think the VorTechs are the best powerheads, each delivering 3000 gph at maximum. The only problem is that each VorTech is over $400 with the wireless driver. This gets into that "you get what you pay for" thing. So all together, I estimate that I have 6200 gph including the returns, or approx 30x tank volume. I'm waiting for it to blow all the scales off my fish.

The rattling on start up is something I am worried about as well with a Wavemaker and Maxijets. However, from observing my tank, it seems like the rattling is mostly from snails that likes to hangout on the Maxijet more than the Maxijet them selves.

I am using a Red Sea Wavemaker with 2 MJ1200 and 1 MJ900 all completely stock. I can try the Maximod if you guys want. I do have one kit laying around that I have not used yet(Due to a lack of a need for more flow).

Wow great article, thanks Carmie. Unfortunately I have the kit from Marine Depot. Has anyone been using the Sea-Flo kits on here?

I have K2's so I've not tried any mod kit but I think that people are using various mods.
