Closed Loop SCWD

Ok i have decided it was time to get my current under raps. i really like the idea of the closed loop design. however in Marc's closed loop design he uses a Mag Drive Pump externaly. Here is the link but i have read on the mag pump box and from other places that mags are not suggestion for external saltwater use? so would i be able to use it externaly or not? does it just get really hot and mess up within a few weeks/months. or does anyone have any ideas on a good external pump? around 600GPH?

Thanks in advance..

I've used Mag pumps wet and dry for years. Very reliable.

I ran a MAG with SCWD for awhile but I couldn't stop it from pulling air. I think you will like it. I used a mouse pad under the mag when ran external.

How much air were you getting? was it causing microbubbles?

Yes it was making micro bubbles but I think it was around the pump pipe connection. I was trying to hard plumb it, in hindsight I think I should have used vinyl tubing at that spot. BTW it will take some time to get all the air out of the SCWD.

One source of micro bubbles does come from around the suction side of pumps. If you don't have tight joints the vacuum created by the pump to move water through will also suck air and the result is micro bubbles. On the discharge side of the pump this would show up as a water leak.

I've sold and used SCWDs ever since they came out and never had a problem clearing the air out of them. It clears in seconds.

SCWDs are available on the net - SCWD

I can't wait till you go home and put it together. I want to see if you run into any troubles or better mods to marcs original. Plus I have to wait till I can find a decently priced distributer of loc line or ebay seller. I also have not figured out were I am going to place the mag pump yet. Keep me informed when you get back of how it goes.

i will, i plan on doing a DIY thread for it. i am using the base design of marc's design but i am using flex tubing in some places ( i think, i have it together right now on my desk with tubes but im not sure if it would benefit me at all.. just virsibility) and i am also using a filter intake tube to try and make it look more professional.
