has ne1 used this product for your closed loop or return OceanMotion
could i get your reviews if you have 1. is it noisy, reliable, what type of pump do you use, etc.

never used it, but have seen it close-up, and friends who have bought it recently. seemed kind of hokkie to me. i chose not to use it until more people have. it's like the old ocean currents except with electronic actuater. i've spent too much and loss too much hopping on the bandwagon.
im just wondering if it is easily obstructed like the sqwd. it cost much more than the squid but if it is efficent and quite it looks like a good product.
you have to install unions and ball valves if you need to take it off. and then you'll have this big plumbing mess and still have to have a way to keep your tank running. it is something to get if you're into the gadgets, but for me, it seemed too skeptical in my opinion.
i have heard people speak highly of them, but no persona experience
it is a great concept, and i have heard many good things about it. it is still to new for me to trust, too many other devices have come and gone for me.
I have a 2 way OM squirt on my 30 Gallon cube and it is awesome. Paul, from Oceans Motions will talk you through set up of your whole system with you dependent on what you want to grow and how "you" want your set up to be. He spent several hours talking to me over the course of a few weeks to get me set up. And he did this for the sale of only one ingenius unit from him. That's what I call customer service.
From what I hear, the SCWD have been known to be unreliable, but I am sure there are some great setups using this model. I guess you really just have to keep them clean. It seems they are easy to set up as well. The OM units are high quality and certainly are not hoakie. I think many people don't get the concept of what Paul is provided for everyone. I have been interested in aquariums since I was a young kid and have been reefing for the last ten years. I will honestly say that during the last ten years, I have never personally felt that I have ever created a natural wave environment within an aqaurium. I have tried Zoo sweeps(getting somewhere but obviously a pain in the *** to maintain), wave maker units(yeah right) and careful placement of power heads. Both of these methods still will perpetuate stagnant water throughout spots in a tank. I feel the Oceans Motions units are unmatched by any previous methods I have attempted or heard of in the hobby.
Let's look into this a little furthur. Many people would agree that taking the time to drill a 30 cube for a closed loop(Blueline - 790gph) through an OM is a little overboard. I do agree, but now I finally have a system that I am confident will thrive as it should. Basically, the set up that Paul(his suggestion) and I(final decision) had decided on was to drill two holes towards the bottom of the tank with loc line bringing one tube under the sand to the front of the tank, y-d off and aimed at the back right and left corners of the tank with the othe part of the 2-way aimed off the back of the tank to the upper front left corner of the tank(my discovery). None of the jets will be aimed at any coral in the tank by the way the rock was aquascaped. Doesn't sound like a big deal does it? Well, lets explore.
The tube to the front is split so that water from the bottom middle area of the front of the tank is pushing many gph's at the filtration for the tank(great system, you know you are moving everything through the filtration). The other split is sent to the back right corner circulating many gph around the back of the tank and into the closed loop intake. The other part of the OM return is coming from the back towards the front corner where it is creating a wave that sweeps over the top of the tank(disruption of the surface of the water). This wave is very strong and slaps itself over the whole shelf of rock in the tank(wonderful system - still gives me chills). I have seen all of the designs using the Revolutions. I have seen these systems up close and have to say that it does not make much sense to me. The basic designs are shooting water out of 1,2, or 3 spouts out the revloution from the top of the tank into the aquarium from above. Why is this an effective water movement design but not an efficient one in terms od detritus removal? Well, you will be spitting water over the topf of everything and pushing everything onto your substrate and rocks. You are not pushing water directly from the bottom of the tank back to your filtration. you are creating water pockets still that are left on the bottom of the tank(detritus factory). Many may disagree and I hope they are right. I just like Paul's new tested design a whole lot more.
O.K. now why do you need the OM to create the perfect natural wave environment possible in a reef tank?
Because by the design of this unit(2 way) there are two openings in a circular drum that open and close every 30 seconds. Lets explore. When you are swimming in the ocean, the current is constantly changing by wave movement. About every 15, 20 , 30 seconds or so people tend to look behind them to see the next wave coming. The OM provides this through the system I have built by this single jet sweeping over the shelf every 30seconds. Basically as the drum moves around the unit, opening #1 is becoming bigger(increasing flow to that return) while opening #2 is becoming smaller(decreasing flow to that reurn). It then moves around doing the exact opposite every 30 seconds creating the most random flow I have ever experienced.
Now this is just with a 2 way unit. I can't even imagine what a 4 way unit can do. I am eager to try and so should you. You won't beleive it until you experience it. If you have the ability to plumb your own tank, the possibilities are endless of what kind of system you wish to create.
I have to say that I have absolutely no direct affiliation with Oceanmotions. I am a very satisfied customer that appreciates great customer service and a genuine concern for the captive raising of reef animals.
I just put in for a premium membership, so as soon as it goes in I will post some pictures and explain. I would really like to add video as it would really show the total circulation of water.
Thank you small fry. I really wantd to try something different with this tank.
Now I have finally uploaded pictures and will now explain the circulation that I posted earlier. Don't mind the brown diatom bloom that is clearing up since my cycle ended.
This first photo is of the front of the tank showing the two jets loclined to the front and y-d off for one side of the Oceansmotions 2way:
O.K., here you see the two jets. The one aimed to the left, upper, middle corner is moving split water to the open left side of the tank around the glass to the other side and up towards the filtration. This can obviously be adapted to an overflow box in a different system. The right side jet is aimed towards the closed loop intake(next photo) and the right, upper, middle, corner moving water around the back of the tank at the same time the other jet is meeting it at the back middle of the tank pushing water over the shelf from the back. Great circulation from this single return. If I had a tank that was 3ft or longer, I would use an OM 4way and do two of these y-d off returns in a similar fashion.
The next photo shows the right jet aimed towards the closed loop intake and the back of the tank:
Here you can see the jet on the left aimed at the strained intake on the right. You can also see the mother bubble in the middle. Nothing too exciting but certainly effective.
The next and last photo is of the left side of the tank displaying the ultimate return(recent discovery and always future assembly):
O.K. here we go, this jet is a single return for the other side of the OM 2way. I happened to discover this on accident as I initially had the jet pointed towards the front of the tank(Paul from OM's original suggestion.)
What happened was the jet was so strong that it was swirling the sand revealing the bottom of the tank that many close loopers experience. So I made the decision to aim the jet more towards the corner of the tank to not stir up the sand. Now I still have the ability to create whatever type of wave I wish every 30 seconds. For example, if I aim it more towards the middle of the glass, I can make the wave come over the front of the tank instead of the rockscape. I can also aim it more towards the front glass to have some of the wave come to the back of the tank. Endless options. I will again say that if I was to set up a 4way OM on a longer tank I would do two of these returns off the back creating alternate waves from both front corners of the tank.
So there you have it, the most natural wavemaking system I have created to date. The jets are placed so that they will not directly flow onto any coral that is placed. Very effective, expensive, but worth it. After using a head pressure loss calculator this Blueline 40HD is moving 650gph out of 790gph by the way I have plumbed this close loop. When I get a video camera to use, I will try to get some video out to show this circulation. It is quite a site and honestly still gives me the chills
Thanks for the kind words Reefbaby. Hopefully I can borrow a video camera to take some video. I don't know where I can post it for everyone to see. I am not sure if we can post video on talkingreef.com.
