Contingency Show?

So Rob, yesterday, the Metrowest Boston Area lost power due to an incredibly powerful squall line/storm that ripped through in and around mid-day. Winds at hurricane force were recorded all over the region. Gusts at 70 MPH were common until about dinner time.

I was without power for 5 hours. Incredibly, I had no losses per se, but did have a flooding issue where my return lines acted as siphons and drained an extra 5 gallons of water into my sump (which could not handle it) and flooded my family room. I fixed that problem last night by FINALLY (knew I should have done this long ago) drilling into the return nozzles to make a 'siphon break'. Also, the tank temperatures dropped to the low 70's in most tanks and into the 60's in my fry tanks. This was not particularly problematic for me because I have a seahorse only systems and no corals. My tanks stay in and around 75-78F anyway.

After all was said and done, it got me thinking... Why not do a podcast for contingency planning!? You could cover everything from battery powered air pumps to backup generators. Tank insulation to siphon breaks.

What say thee?

Dave

Found this site (and magazine) on alternate power sources for the home.

http://www.homepower.com/

They have some primer articles on wind and solar power. They may be able to be modified to provide an alternate power source during a long power outage like after a hurricane.

Also this is interesting.

Dave, bummer to hear about the outage and flood. But glad to hear of no major losses.

I agree, this topic would make a good podcast.

Definitely a good podcast...maybe you should take some polls of what people have done in the past to get some good ideas to present on the podcast. i.e.-what solutions have people used to deal with certain problems?

Just a thought,
Jon
