live rock curing

Hi Rob:
I'm in the process of setting up a 35 gal. reef tank and I was wondering what is the best way to cure live rock and what are the steps involved. So with that said, maybe you can have a podcast concerning the steps involved in choosing, curing, and other steps concerning live rock.

Steve - you can either cure your LR in vats or in your display tank. The advantage to a vat is that you can leave all the detritus and die off behind in the vat, rather than having it in the tank. Make sure you have a strong flow, you don't need any light and it's beneficial to skim while you're curing.

If you are just setting up your tank I would recommend curing the live rock in the tank. This will get you cycle going (check out the cycling podcasts) and feed your sand with some vital critters. I cured mine this way and it worked out well. Just don't cure it in a tank that is already stocked with critters! Later!

remember u can also include the curing vat in a closed loop with your tank after the cycles is complete. waste not want not if ur not planning on a major step in the future.
