Rob,

You have my condolences, my friend. I can completely relate to your situation as my tank had crashed a few months ago while I too was away for work. Something had caused an ammonia spike while away (I suspect my 6-Line as he was stuck to the side of my powerhead intake filter... or atleast half of him). I lost all corals and only my two clowns and their anemone survived. I was horrified when I came home... needless to say, I will never go away again without having a "tank-buddy" care for my tank.

On a positive note Rob...
I know you said in the beginning of the episode that you only had a few notes for the show (I guess you are normally much more prepared) but I didn't notice, so you must have this podcasting stuff mastered. Good show despite your difficult times. And all 1,148 of us are here to back you. So just ask if you need anything.

Rob, i have a quick question for you regarding something you said in your cast. You mentioned that you only had about 25 gallons of water made up. Is it okay to store premixed water in sealed containers without heat or agitation? For example, what if you had a couple of 10 gallon pvc buckets and you made some water in them (i.e let the salt dissolve fully using a powerhead), then hammered on the airtight lid, and let the buckets sit in your basement for months? Could this be an emergency stash of water?

actually yes, however i would do it with just regular FW, not mixed water. this way there is no chance for the good stuff in the salt to break down. then you can mix it up and heat it as you need to.
i mean if you think about it its goign to take a few hours to warm that water up before you can use it... great time to add in the salt..

FYI, this is my opinion, i have not really tested the longevity of premixed saltwater..

Regardless of your religious beleif, we all pray that this wont happen to us. I feel tears forming as I type this... Rob, I downloaded as many past eps as I could and burned them to a cd and took them on my recent travels. Thank you for the reef fix while I was away. I salute you and your efforts here with TR. My best wishes you rebuild, and may it be even better than before....

During the cast, you statethat with the heaters off in your system, your heat dropped to 74-75... low, but "not low enough to cause death..."

I usually keep my system (Reef) at 72, what are you recommending for temp?

Jason

thanks for the kind words Jason

regarding temp,
as long as we are speaking or your normal tropical reef (yes there are cold water species) the recommended temp is 78-82F.
i keep all my reef system at 81-82F
