lol.. well it "can" be fishes depending on the context in which its used.
when you are talking about 5 clown fish, its 5 fish.
but if you were talking about 5 different species, or different species in the plural, then its fishes.. clear as mud?? lol
its like the difference in s school of fish or a shoal, a school is a collection of tightly packed fish that follow the leader, where a shoal, is a much more loose collection of fish, that will wonder around looking for food and such, but will still look to a leader for overall direction

Ahab, it is one of those English words that doesn't follow the rule. When talking about baby fish "fry" is both singular and plural. You just have to love English!
