if you like the small size of box cameras but want the near versatility of an DSLR I would recomend the cannon G9. It is $500 but it is the best small camera on the market...and I am a nikon man.
This is my first DSLR camera so i've just been playing around with the shutter speed and aperture trying to get good shots..
It seem that a lot of people in my local club have ether my camera or the d50 so thats why i went with the Nikon...The display is simple and user friendly,i love it and think its the only way to go for a first DLSR.
I thought I was a pretty decent photographer until I started taking pix of me tank. It's a whole different ballgame! Take hundreds of shots, play with the settings, use a tripod, and bracket every shot because the light meter is usually wrong.
I have a Canon EOS 1Ds.....LOVE it! Although I have to admit that my landscape/nature shots are much much better than my aquarium shots.
I once found a super site on aquarium photography, with tons of great tips, but I haven't been able to locate it again....hmmm...have to do some more searches.
