How cool... Can you imagine the thrill of finding and identifying even one new species?

Hey wildone,

A friend e-mailed me this link today and I checked out the "new" walking shark. The researchers that "found" it didn't check into their species "Hemiscyllium freycineti before making the announcement. It was first discovered in 1824 and named Scyllium freycineti.

It's the Eppaulette shark in our trade. Fairly common actually. I don't know how they could believe it's a new species. Here's the link I used to check it out - http://www.fao.org/figis/servlet/species?fid=12617

It does look like the Flasher Wrasse is new.

Good info Amp, your link sure reads like it is the same species to me! I wonder how they decided it was new?

The main article from yahoo talks about cyinide and dynomite to "fish" the reef. My cousin who is building a home in the Phillipenes (sp) says that is a very common practice there. It is hard to believe that it is still allowed. it just goes to show you how far we have to go to get people to understand conservation.

totally disgraceful it is! they have some of most exotic species in the oceans & they have total disregard for whats morally correct. we will rip these traders a new passage if the try thoses tactics in our waters.
