New to Frags: How to transfer to Tank

Hey all,

I've recently picked my first corals, including a few frags, a Stylophora Pistilata, a very small (~1.5") Euphyllia paradivisa, and a tiny (~1") Euphyllia parancora, all mounted on frag disks. I would like to know if I should re-mount these frags onto my display tank LR once they finish quarantine, or if I should just epoxy these disks onto the LR.

What is normally done?

You can take your choice on that one Scott. If the frag disks look OK where your frags are going leave them. If you'd like to mount one in a special place, you can remove it from the disk and re-mount it. However, that being said, it's better for the frag not to be re-mounted because of the extra handling. Corals will grow over the disk in short order and in time you won't even know they are there. But, there are instances where you might want to re-mount.

I bought a small tile wet saw at HD for $89 that does a great job cutting corals, and removing excess rock or frag disks, etc. I highly recommend anyone getting into fragging on a regular basis get one. I also bought a Dremel tool. They come in handy as well.

Thanks Amph...I definitely see a tile saw in my future, along with a rubber apron and a face shield!

Just to clarify: When you keep the frag on the disk, do you use epoxy putty to mount your frag disks to the LR, or do you not adhere the disk so you can easily move it later? I anticipate that the frag disks will not sit flat on my bumpy LR, and I do not want them to wobble or topple in the flow.

let me know if you want to buy a wet tile saw. i have one that has been GENTLY used i can sell you.

as for mounting ... i epoxy mine to the rock. even if you want to move them, it are pretty easy to break the bond. i use plumber putty on mine and not the epoxy glue.

I epoxy those I want in a permanent position, some I leave lose until I decide where I want them. A few topple because of bulldosing Turbos, I just set them back up.

I've heard of people getting nasty infections from handling some corals with bare hands. I haven't experienced this but, think when I get serious about this I'll go with latex gloves.
