Hello all. My first tank has only been filled with water and cured live rock for 5 days. (cured live rock was in a rubbermade for a week before this with powerheads and a heater. I used approximately 15 gallons from that rubbermade with about 40 ballons of fresh RO/DI saltwater when I filled the tank). The sandstorm has cleared and the water looks crystal clear. Skimmer and pumps are running. Every day, I've been blowing sand off the live rock...trying not to create too big of a sand storm. I've got most of it blown off the rock. My question is.... there's a small fuzz growing on the live rock. Doesn't really look like algae or anything. Is this how the rock will always look....or am I supposed to be trying to blow that off the rock? A turkey baster doesn't do much to remove it. Should I try using a powerhead to blow it off....is it a feature of the live rock ?
Hi Gwen-o-lyn. No, it's not a brown dusting. Looks like short hairs in some places, and in other places, it looks like the rock is shedding. My parameters are: Ammonia: Either 0 or .25 . Kind of looks in between. Nitrates: 10 Nitrites: 0 PH: 8.0
Thanks, Pam

Hi Carmie and Gwen-o-lyn. What is HA Carmie? Gwen...there's no obvious color to it. I bought the rock from Premium Aquatics, not my LFS (didn't care for the Fiji the LFS had). I took some pics, but you can't really see it in the pics. It's not much right now, but I was wondering if I need to do something before it does become an issue.
Hi Pammy,
I believe I have the same thing growing on my live rock in my 12g.For lack of a better example, mine looks almost like aptasia tentacles.
Hasn't caused a problem, and I'm more of a "leave well enough alone" person myself.
Short of attempting to remove it with tweezers,I'm just keeping an eye on it, and let the rock do it's thing.
Good circulation has mine decreasing,so all seems to be moving in the right direction.
Best of luck with your new tank,and..gotta love those Turkey Basters!!
Hi Carmie. If I had to say it was any color...I would say grayish white. It's VERY short right now, and not covering all rocks...just a few sections. Do snails take care of Hair Algae, or is this part of a new cycle and goes away on it's own. Or is it just the natural look of live rock?
Pam

Pam,
It seems after looking at the growth on my live rock with a magnifying glass, it's some sort of dead or dying macroalgae.
My assumption would be it is a normal part of the rock cycling.
I apologize for the aptasia comparison,I should have chosen my words more carefully.

Either way, I can't see a problem with blowing by with even the most powerful powerhead to clean your rock. Later on when you have little frags stuck in the crevices and such, sure -but at this point, I'd suggest giving them a once-over.
