I wanted for years to keep corals but because I always had to setup tanks at everyone else’s houses I could only keep fish only tanks but now that I finally have the room to have a tank I can. I have started setting up the tank and was wondering about a quarantine tank. Should I quarantine coral if so what kinda tank do I need what do I need in it? Any advice would be helpful thank you for you time.
I would quarantine anything I buy just to be sure not to contaminate the main tank. I use a 20 gal tank with the same equipment I have on my main tank, filter, power head,, and lights to suit the needs of whatever you are puting in the tank. I would keep the specimen in quarantine for at least two weeks and check of it frequently. I am pretty new to reef keeping, so I am sure there is somebody else more knowledgable than i am, but this is what I do, and have had no problems yet. I do suggest you research whatever species you plan on puting in your tank, and know what it needs to survive, lighting, feeding, supplements, and so forth before buying anything. Hope this helps

Thank You wwest for that link it was very helpful but it doesnt go into any detail about lighting and that is one of my main issues if i have this coral in my qt tank for 2 week what kinda lighting will i need the other would be about a cheaper route to go for a light on my QT
Well lighting would be a big deal in keeping corals but you wouldn't really have to go with MH's or VHO's, yes it would be great and the corals that need heavy lighting would be happier but if you were to use a 20 gallon wide then more doors are open with ready made lights and the tank is short so the intensity of light wouldn't have to penetrate as deep so you could go with PC's. As long as the wattage is over 65watt you should be ok for a weeks. Sorry i didn't answer sooner i didn't fully understand the question
Another idea would be using T5's, i haven't used T5's with corals but if you got maybe 6 10k bulbs then you should be ok, Hopefully someone else will pop in with more experience in T5's
Really one of my main concerns was that i would have to spend $300 on lighting for a QT. And with my other hobbies kicking in I don't really have that kinda cash laying around so if I can set up a 10 or 20 gal tank in the garage with PC lighting I wouldn't mind but a MH lighting setup I wouldn't beable to do; I don't think? So any advice on how I can setup a QT lighting for, I would hate to say but, general use would be helpful. WWest suggested PC lighting I think I can do at about $90.
It's always a good idea to quarantine. PC lighting should be fine for your QT because of the relatively short time the specimens will be in QT.
Where in S FL do you live? I'm in between Vero Beach and Ft. Pierce.

The rule I like best concerning QTs is to quarantine anything wet. Rocks, snails, fish, corals, whatever.
As far as lights go, since the QT is usually much shorter than your display and the water isn't near as deep, the PC lights will be fine for corals for a couple weeks. You don't want to blast new corals with a normal lighting cycle of super bright lights anyway. The PC will give them a chance to adjust after a pretty brutal trip from a far away ocean. And tank raised corals will be all the more able to deal with PC in a QT for a few weeks.
