I just bought a used 65 gal tank w/ stand & Hood. I was also lucky enough to get a sump as well. I am planning on setting it up in my Family room where my family and I spend most of our time. we enjoy lots of movies in this room so I need a quiet pump.

I posted on my local site and I was told that I should get a Mag 9. When I searched for info on the Mag 9 almost all of the posts said they were noisey and the most of the sugestions for the Mag Pumps where from someone trying to sell theirs. the same people complaining days ealier about the noise were telling me they were great pumps and I should buy theirs

Unfortunatly the sump is devide in to three sections so I have limited room for the pump. The tank has a built in over flow with the pipe running to the top of the overflow from the bulk head with a 180* bend at the top. I think that this means that the overflow will be completly filled before the water heads to the sump. the sump is 24"x12" with 2 baffles so i have 3 compartments.
I was told one could hold a skimmer one a refugium and in the middle a return pump. The existing set up had a Y so that the water split to the ends of the sump and overflowed to the middle. One of the baffles is at an angle so the center compartment is tight. it is 4" at the small side and 7" at the wider side x 12" accross.

I have a mag 9 as my return and one running my EV180 skimmer. My tank is in the den where we spend most of our time and watch TV, play games, etc. It's not noisy at all. In fact, the loudest thing about my tank is the outflow from the skimmer back into the sump.

I was told that a Mag 9 is too big for my 90g. Others with 90s said that the Mag7 works great, so that is what I am going with. ( Return pump for 90 )So you may want to scale back a bit unless you are counting on lots of flow from your return. Though even that much flow through the sump coudl be higher than desired.

Also how big is your drain line? And is your overflow rated for a particular voume? Usually the overflow rating depends on the drain size. A 1" drain can handle up to around 600gph without pressure.

yeah, unless its throttled the Mag 9 might be too big..
as for noise, you might want to look at the QueitOne brand pumps, they are .. well... quiet...lol

i have a Mag 5 and a Mag 24 they are both quite audible, but all my systems are in the basement and everything is loud so i cant really say much else

I currently am running the QuietOne pump for my return on my fish tank and my bed is 1 foot to 2 feet away from tank and can't hear a thing. Go with Rob's recommendation!

Hmmm, good thoughts. If it is that much quieter... I was going to get a backup Mag 7, but I think I may get a QuietOne and save the Mag7 I have for a backup.

As Nacifinatic suggested you should first find out what your overflow is rated for and try to determine how many gph are running through it down to you sump. This will aide you in determining the gph your pump needs to send back to the return. If your overflow is sending 600 gph to you sump then you don't want a pump that is returning much more than that to the tank. Of course there are ways to offset the extra return flow from the pump such as diverting some flow directed to the tank back into the return or sump. Another way is to install a ball valve and decrease the return flow though keep in mind this may decrease the lifespan of the pump>
