sand and rocks

okay i'm sure some of you think i ask too many questions, but i'm one of those people who asks questions til' i'm satisfied and i'm never satisfied.
so on to the question. is there any specific arrangement for sand with rocks, i mean does it matter how much sand i have compared to rock? does it matter whether i choose one or both. i am pretty much completely naive with almost every aspect of aquariums so if something random pops into your head you think would be important, don't be shy.

I am realitivley new to saltwater, but what really matters is weather you want a DSB I belive a DSB is 4 or 5 inches deep. With the rock it depends on weather you have LR or base rock, but with rocks and sand there is no proportion thing. Its really up to you. Some people have a wall of rock with hardly any sand which would be called a BB-Bare Bottom tank, while yet others will have a DSB-Deep Sand Bed, and yet other may elect to have both. Again the choice remains up to you. Having a lot of rock and a lot of sand depends on how much filtration you want. There is always a lot of debate over weather a DSB is a problem or a nuisence. If you check out all of the podcast there info on all that I mentioned here. Sorry if I confused you, again I am not an expert by any means and will most likely be debunked lol.
