Question h2o2-hydrogen peroxide dosing???????

Hello

I was wondering if anyone has any experience dosing a reef tank with Hydrogen Peroxide, to keep it clean and healthy.

this site
http://www.reefs.org/library/talklog...nn_092097.html
mentions someone (Gary V. Deutschmann, Sr.) using 1cc per gallon of water to dose instead of using Ozone to keep the tank clean and purfied.
This person states that they have been using it for 6 years since this seems a safer alternative to ozone I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge about this. And shed some light as too how often to dose, weekly, monthly?

thank you for your help

Mark

i have used hydrogen peroxide as a deactivator after adding potassium permanganate. and had no problems. i am not sure about the long-term caustic effect of h2o2 if used permanently. i bought a product called "oxy-nater" that uses h2o2. when i dismantled my tank a year later, i noticed the spot on the bottom of my 100gal plexi completely crazed and some fine cracks. i threw the device away.

hyrogen perox uses are well known in the fresh water trade for ridding tanks of bad algae breakouts beyond normal control! however it doesn't solve the problem in the first place, just makes a false appearance cause it desolves the protein & ammino chains out of existance! often leaving the toxic leftovers free floating & disolved for extrction by what ever means employed to so it> ether that or it settles in the bed for a second coming!
great for cleaning your gear though! & in trace amounts just like vinagar it can promote certain bacterial growth! but in saying that i wouldn't used it in marine! im not up to speed with who u posted there, that DR doesn't ring any bells, but sounds more like a cowboy thats been lucky on a few occasions! ive even heard some people have even used it to increase oxygen satuation levels in their tanks, only to watch everything except fish die in a gooie mess, with a strong enough dose u will cause lens to cloud, the gills membranes will wafer causing the fish to breath like crazy with little to no oxygen adsorbtion & a 24hour irration in between the platlets of the scales on your fish> dose alittle to high & they are cactus too!
the worst thing is the actual dosing side> its PH & Temp dependant among other things in order to correctly dose at the "deemed safe levels" whatever that is! how long is a piece of string & which animals will be effected?

thats funny i asked randy about this a few weeks ago and he was not positive about that idea. i was thinking of using it as a substitute for ozone as well. i know it is dangerous but i will probably employ this by the end of the year.

Hello

If you are going to take the chance make sure to post your results here, so that those of us interested can see what's happening. Keep a good log of how much you are dosing

thank you

I've used H2O2 in the aquaculture field for prophylactic treatments to marine fish and also to increase O2 when tank densities are extremely high. We were using 37% H2O2 which is very dangerous and you should wear proper eye and hand protection when handling it. It can be neutralized with sodium thiosulfate (also neutralizes bleach) so if signs of stress are seen in the fish, you can always stop the treatment. I'm not sure about adding it to a reef tank but in small doses it probably wouldn't cause any problems. I didn't read the article the was referenced in the first post yet to see what concentration was used but I will go check it out.
