PiscesGirl is on a distinguished road
Need a new sump pump/skimmer

I have a 55 gal. tank
It's about 16" from the top to the sand bed.

between the sump and the bottom of the tank is about 14" (coming out of the sump is a hose that pumps water through a coralife mega watt uv light...don't know the wattage?? them out from the u.v to the tank. There doesn't seem to be much flow and I know my sump is junk.

the sump itself is a 20 gal and is about 14" from top to bottom (give or take a few inches??)

I need a new sump my old one came with the tank so I dont know much about it. All I could find on it was .8amps 45 watt

I was wondering what type of pump I should get that would be appropriate for my tank. I don't think the flow is slow enough through the u.v. anyway so I was considering taking it out.
I was looking into getting a mag drive...is a md 5 or 7 good for me?

Also,
I need a protien skimmer: I don't know how it would work. Is it better to have it in the sump? That doesn't seem to be very roomy in there...or can it hang on the sump and if so does the pump for the skimmer go in the sump? Also, my sump has a lid on it...how would a hang on work? I want to keep the lid on to protect the water from dust and junk.

THANKS!!!
