Coral

I was visiting Florida recently and picked up some coral on the shore & was wondering about the implications if I put this in a tank with live rock. This would be a new tank & the coral & any inhabitants long dead...
Would the coral become live after a while if I mixed in some live rock?
Would it then be as good as live rock or not?

Thanks,

Ron

Hi Ron!

Welcome to TR!

Yes you may add dead coral pieces to your tank. In fact, many people do. As far as it becoming "live coral" - no the actual coral won't come back *sorry if I'm being too basic*, but yes it will be just as good as Live Rock and have all the good stuff growing on it. It will eventually be covered in coralline and blend in with your LR. I don't see any reason why this wouldn't eventually be just as good as LR once it's established.

I moved your thread for you. Feel free to add your tank to the tank build thread- we'd love to watch your tank grow up And make yourself at home.

Thanks for the info (And so quick too)
I just wasn't sure about the density of the coral vs live rock & if that would potentialy make a difference in it's value to the tank (Once live).

I have not started my tank yet, but am getting closer (This is something I have been interested in for a few years now).

Maybe i should make this a new thread but does anyone have an opinion on the seaclear system II tanks? They look tempting, but my rule of thumb is that something that trys to do alot of things usually doesn't do any of them really well...

Thanks again,

Ron

LR, is the preferred type. as using coral skeletons is not as effective.

as far as the system, i would not recommend such a system if you are going to do reef rank, but for a fish only tank it might work out ok.

but i agree with your comment:
something that tries to do a lot of things usually doesn't do any of them really well...

this is usually the case..
