BC29 - options for return pump upgrade

I want to hear what return pumps people have been upgrading their BC29's with.
I've heard alot of Rio 6hf pumps but wanted to hear what other options there are.

are you looking for more flow, less heat or ?

lots of peeps are using MJ's. we used an MJ 600 on our JBJ 24. we were looking for just a "tad" less flow and less heat. when i swapped the stock pump out, i was shocked at how much power it drew. the MJ dissipates less than half, and dropped our temp a good 2.5*F. it also dropped right in (can't beat that ). maybe a 900 or 1200 would work for you.

as for Rio's...they've always had a bad rep for burning up or not restarting after outages. i'd steer clear of them for any application where they're the main pump (such as this one).

I'm looking to increase flow but I've heard the MaxiJet 1200 will make the temp rise.

you need to compare the power dissipation in Watts to that of the stock pump, or whatever pump you're looking at. it looks like the 1200's do get a bit warm, altho the smaller MJ's typically seem to run fairly cool when compared to many.

a Rio 6HF??? seems like i only see numbers like 200, 600, etc. do ya have a link?

MJ 1200 dissipates 20W and pumps 295 GPH

Rio 600 dissipates 9.5W and pumps 200 GPH

Rio 1100 Plus dissipates 22W and pumps 382 GPH

the comparable Via Aquas run a bit warmer.

The Rio Hyperflow 6 only draws 15 watts and 350 gph @ 1 foot. Rio Hyperflow

uhh i believe rob said that the new ones supposedly are better and fixed the problem. and dont they make the seios? so either they fixed it , or i should take my seio out right now. lol

yeah because i need a pump for my above tank sump i want to do, but a quiet one pump or a mag pump will not fit and the rios are the only thing small enought and strong enough

yeah, i found that the burning, shorting, and leaking pumps were the older large RIO like the 2500 and 3100... these were reported as fixed with the RIO+ models

Thanks everyone! I've ordered the Rio 6hf (350gph) with some loc line with a Y connector to make two return outlets from the Rio and some Eheim tubing.
