New Oceanic Bio Cube 14

I have a year old six-gallon Nano with a False Percula, Yellow Tail Damsel, 2 Hermit crabs, 2 Cowrie snails, a Feather Duster and a Fire Shrimp set up in an Eclipse 6 system with a 2 inch sand bed and about 8lbs of live rock. I have wanted some coral for a long time, but you just cannot get enough light into an Eclipse 6. This past weekend I jumped in and bought an Oceanic Bio Cube 14, a Mini-Jet 606 (so that the total flow will be about 280 GPH), 15 lbs of live rock, and a Fission Nano Skimmer. I really wanted the Bio Cube 29, but I just do not have enough room in my den with out getting rid of some furniture or speakers or the big screen TV or something, so I ended up with the 14 that will sit on the end table between the couch and overstuffed chair. I set up the cube with the live rock to cycle. I plan on moving the sand and live rock from the Eclipse as well as the livestock after the new tank has cycled. At this point I am setting the cube up like Oceanic designed it (with the wet/dry), because I do not want to enlarge the overflow between the first and second chambers (do not want to make irreversible changes to a new tank). This means I cannot fit the Nano Skimmer into the rear of the tank. Question – Should I return the skimmer, or should I place it in the front feeder door and use it overnight once a week? Next question – Once I move the sand, I should have about an inch in the bottom is this enough (any difference between ¾” and 2 ½” besides appearance)? I know that a DSB is preferable, but in a cube that would take up a significant amount of the already scarce volume as well as raise the level of the sand bed above the lower water intake grid.
Last question – I have never had any corals. I know what I am doing with fish and to a smaller degree with inverts, but have no clue with corals. From past experience I am not real trusting of LFS advice. Help with some advice on what corals are “easy” and best to start with and how fast can you ad them and how many can go in a tank. Right now I feed my fish and shrimp mostly flake and my feather duster DT’s. I would like to keep it simple and not add a complicated feed schedule for the coral. Thanks for your input.

Hello Jon and to TR!

As far as your skimmer, I'd recommend running one 24/7. I would not run a reef tank without a skimmer going all the time.

DSB: You stated "that a DSB is preferable," and maybe this is what you prefer, but many people have BB and SSB tanks. You may keep any type of sandbed as long as you know how to maintain it. I'm gonna guess that most nano reefers have lesser amounts of sand for the reason you mentioned. There isn't going to be much difference from 3/4" than 2.5".

Here are some easy corals that will grow under your PC lighting:
Zoanthids
Leather corals
Green Star Polyps
Kenya Tree

I would recommend you allow your new live rock to fully cure before adding corals. Most LFS sell what they call "cured rock" but it's highly unlikely that it's fully cured. Allow it to sit in your tank about 12 weeks, and then test your water. If everything is ok, then you can add corals. I would recommend you try 2 of the corals on my list and see how they do. If you are successful, then a month later, buy a few more. The corals I mentioned don't require extra feeding, so when you feed your fish mysis and flakes, you are feeding your corals.

I have to agree the Fission skimmer just isn't worth the work it takes to dial it in. Unless you have an auto top off the the water level in the cubes fluctuates too much. I just tried to use mine on on a 5.5 gallon tank I had set up and all it did was flood the collection cup. Plus if your cube has a hood on it like my Aquapod does you have to either leave it open or lower your water level to get the collection cup to stay out of the water. Then there are the micro bubbles... No mater what I tried they never went away. For the time being I am doing 5 gallon water changes bi weekly and it seems to work.

Without headaches the Aquac is a great HOB skimmer and will help keep you nutrient levels down. You can find them cheap on Ebay.

Yeah I have an Aqua C Remora and it seems to do the job. Some day down the road I plan on upgrading to MH lights on the Pod so I can either run the Remora or maybe get one of the new AquaC Nano skimmers.

How do you hang an AquaC Remora on a Cube with a closed hood? Please take a look at the Bio Cube and if you have a suggestion let me know. I really do not want to cut up my new tank, or ruin the nice look it has.

Sorry, I am not familiar with the cube and how the components are set up in the hood. Maybe you can take a picture of the hood open and the back to give everyone a better Idea of what you are working with. You can also try going skimmerless. and have an all natural system, I have seen awsome tanks that do not run skimmers but they are 50+gal. The nano reefers out there can help you out better than I can
