Maximus II Help For Morons

Hello fellow reefers. I am in need of some assistance as I am trying to assemble my handy dandy new and improved Maximus II RO/DI unit. It is a six stage unit with a cylinder tank. I heard someone mention that it took them about 5 minutes to assemble theirs. Much to my amazement, I have been puttering with mine for 3 days off and on now when I get home in the evenings from work. (Ok, I heard that! I'm a nincompoop and know it. Don't rub it in! ) Hmmmmmmmmm. The moron mechanical sydrome has taken over and left me frustrated. I did not get any instructions manuel in the box, but did get a link to the instructions, or at least that's what they were suppose to be. I believe they were designed for knowledgeable RO/DI people who would get bored to tears with any details or explanations. However, me being the "step/look at the diagram" kind of person that I am, everything has been over my head. I did surf the web and found a picture of what the unit should look like assembled, thus I used that to try to finish putting it together. Is there anyone here that has purchased one of these units? I believe I have the canisters/flow going the right way in the correct sequence. my question is this...... I plan on using the hose adapter for the intake. I see the twist lever to control the flow, but why is the other end open? (I am speaking about the hose adapter design) Do I attach another garden hose to this as waste water? Also I have a hose coming off of the 4th cylinder, the one after the 3 major components, and it has a restrictor/flow valve? and I believe it is used for waste water? I'm lost here guys and really need some help. And I personally think that even though I have read and reread the instruction, my stress level is so high, anxiety, that I'm not understanding. Any help would be appreciated as I am about to toss it out the window!!!

I checked out the link you gave for the instructions, and all of the images came through for me (I'm using Windows XP and IE 7). The images do seem to do a pretty good job at explaining the installation. Are you getting red "X"s where the images should be? If not, it's possible they're just taking a long time to load.

I installed a similar unit last week and like you, I spent a few days just pondering the installation mystery. I finally bit the bullet and just installed it (part of me just thought that it was *too* easy, there had to more to it). In my case, there were really only 2 things I had to do: Attach the piercing valve to the cold water copper pipe and attach the discharge saddle to the drain....of course I had to connect the appropriate tubes to each of these. Mine came with the faucet as well, however instead of attaching the faucet to the sink, I just have a spot to hang it up underneath the sink. I don't think this will cause a problem, and it's really not that inconvenient.

The only leak I had was from one of the 3 pre-filters that was not tightened all the way...which I'm pretty I loosend during my initial analysis phase.

Thanks Jason. I have been tinkering with it and believe I have all the cylinders going the right flow direction and the tubing connected. I still have 2 major questions.

1) I plan on using a hose adapter for the intake. The metal attachment they sent has both a male and female end with the tube insert with t twist in the center. What do I do with this male section? I plan on using this on a faucet in my garage. Is there a screw on cap that can be purchased to seal this end? It looks like an attachment one would use when they want to hook up 2 things from the same faucet.

2) The yellow tube for waste water has a silver metal restrictor flow valve on this, but I saw a white/blue flow valve in the box and see it on a pic I found surfing the web for this unit. Which valve should be used on the yellow line? Should I take this metal piece off? I have the correct piece already installed on the tank.

Other than that, I believe I'm set, short of maybe sealing any leaks that spring up.

Oh, and yes! To the question about why I can't follow the directions. There are major junks missing throughout the entire instructions with little tiny red x on the left hand side. That's why I found that pic and tried to set it up based on that visual.

They make hose adapters that can be used for your water supply. The drain line just has to be run somewhere were you want the dirty water to go. I put my waste water down the drain line of my washing machine. The hose adapter can be found on ebay I think. If you still need help pm me and I will give you my number. I have set up many of the these things including industrial size ones.

Heres a quote from the Aquasafe guys that should help you with the flow restrictor.

"The membrane makers would love to see us throw away 9 gallons for every 1 good gallon. No wonder, the membrane would last forever. The current generally accepted ratio is 3 or 4 to 1. Our new design can adjust the discharge for maximum water conservation.

It is simple. Unscrew the stem to the max and the restrictor is wide open in the "flush" position. Then very slowly tighten it until you get a drip....then a tiny bit more and then you will have a small flow. That probably is you point of maximum effectiveness in a low pressure situation. Time how long it takes to make a quart of good water. Then see how much waste water is generated. Play with it until the ratio is 3:1 and you are a "Green".

They are looking to make one quart of good water for every 3 quarts of waste water.

Hello Poppin So what you are telling me is to not worry about the white plastic flow restrictor that came in the box? Just keep the metal flow restrictor on there right?

it sounds like the new (metal) flow restrictor is the way to go. As long as you follow the adjustment procedure you should be better off than using a fixed a restrictor valve...a least according to the aquasafe guys.

Thanks everyone! I'll try to get to Lowes tomorrow and see about getting the correct hose adapter. I hope they have something that I can use.
