Deep Sand Beds with Nassarius Snails

I have a 4" sandbed and listened to both episodes on DSB. How do nassarious sanils affect the DSB? Because they burry in it and then come out, wouldn't this have negative effects? I have about 500 in my 75 gal and just thought, hmmmm i wonder if this is bad.

~Josh

THanks

no.. they are actually great for the sand bed. they do not burrow in a way that hurts anything. they actually will bring waste/food products under the surface for "processing" and promote the water to move into/threw the sand bed.

if you remember from the first sand bed show, i stated that water foes NOT flow through the sand bed as commonly thought. its moved through by all your sand bed critters, these snails being one of them

How many nassarius snails would be too many for a 90 gallon tank? Also, are there tricks to feeding snail eggs? I have a small (15 gallon tank) with snail eggs everywhere...rocks, glass, etc. I want them to hatch, but don't know if there is anything I should do.

are you sure they are eggs? and not small snails?
just asking.. i know that i have loads of very small snails, less than 1mm in size.
i did nothing special, but i know there was a spawn, as i have hundreds of them.
again, nothing special, they are all doing fine. when my tank lights go out, they are EVERYWHERE..

i am not an expert on this, so take it with a grain of salt..

so here's my next question, since the Nassarious snails are stiring up the sand, how don't they hurt the arobic/anarobic bacteria's? I thought the whole point was to not have oxygen go to certain parts of the DSB but when water is going there, so is oxygen. Thanks.

because the they don't go that far down...
most Nass. snails will only go down just under the surface. the anaerobic areas are below that.
the first inch or so is a higher oxygen region, not fully aerobic, but still not anaerobic, or anoxic.
this is one of the reasons that you need a 4-5 inch deep sand bed, because anything less just isn't deep enough to maintain a full anaerobic area.

I am pretty sure that they are eggs. They aren't moving and it seems as if the snails keep laying more. I will post pics tonight when I get home. It is really cool, but I hope they survive.
