I'm puzzled about your Nitrates being 10 on day one. What water source are you using?

grocery store water....an RO machine...i plan on getting my own filter soon
i mentioned earlier that i had a mini cycle (i didn't monitor it)...but there was dead rock in the tank....along w/ live cc from my 40g....if you look at the pics you will see the diatoms all over the sand
i was dropping in a few flakes to feed the bacteria, every other day.....also there were pods in there, from my cc
i also forgot...i added water from my other tank...about 15 gallons or so, i think
i wanted to ask.....the diatoms are on my back glass too, as of this morning.....i didn't have that with 40....the diatoms lasted maybe a day or so.....could that be a sign of a future algae issue?
LMAO...my dearest daughter is distressed because i'm not buying the crosshatch we saw at the LFS....she thinks he was cool...she also wants a "dory"....egads!
so, do i need to be concerned about those trates or does it makes sense because of the mini-cycle?
I would be wondering where they came from. Nitrates are the end product of the Nitrogen cycle. You are getting a reading at the beginning of the cycle which leads me to believe they are in your source water. Buying RO water at the grocery store does not mean the unit is kept in optimum condition. They are not concerned with Nitrate in drinking water. What consumer is going to have a test kit to evaluate their water? Only us reefers. Test the water before you use it. Test it after you mix salt in it before you add it to the tank. What brand of salt are you using? Some advertise they contain no Nitrates but at IMAC a couple of weeks ago Kent was giving away packages of salt to consumers and someone mixed up a batch and had a test kit manufacturer test it for Nitrates and it was present. Freshly mixed with RO/DI water. Go figure!!!

okay....i'll test the water & see....i just assumed it was from the mini-cycle
i had to save my turbo today...don't know how he did it, but the little bugger was flipped upside-down & stuck...he is safely back chomping on my algae
i found my camera cord....now, i can share my psychotic skimmer....thankfully, i have a sense of humor:-)....it is producing wet foam like crazy......supposed to be hanging-on, but i am going to leave in the fuge for a few days & see if that will prime it.....supposedly, i need to keep emptying it, but that would mean i would have to empty it every 2 minutes.....if all else fails, i will call aqua-medic on monday...ack!
if your gaol is to have lots of coral, i would look at getting more stable real estate.
if fish only it will be perfect.
but for the coral you are going to want some spaces that are more stable,
just my 2 cents..
great job, thanks for sharing the images
oops...i just saw this post...rob, do you mean like some larger flatter areas?......as it is, it is pretty stable....i can shake it & nothing moves

about 3(?) years ago, there was a class action lawsuit against the company that supplies and maintains the water machines at 3 major supermarket chains in california. turns out they rarely ever maintained the machines execpt to collect the money. it was reported that at some machines, they just simply removed the membrane when it became clogged witout replacing them. at this time there is a chain of water stores also in california(maybe also other states, i can't remember) being sued for selling water not to promised standards.
