To be honest I think the frag tank may have been a good thing if I had the time. Right now I am so busy at work and with the new baby, that it leaves little extra time. I initially though it would only be a couple extra hours a week, but it was more like 70% more work in the end. Since I didn't have enough time to give it the care I needed, it never did well, and my frags didn't grow as well as they were inmy other tank. Also my electric bill was higher due to the MH, so all in all if was a failed experiment due to lack of planning. That seems to be a common topic with me right now, lack of planning.
I did find that my stomatellas mated and there are some babies. I love how things just happen in these reef tanks...
Carmie, i thought you had some leathers anyways? didn't it do battle with the hydriods?
Wildman, id like to say welcome back, shocking to know i myself wasn't even here to miss your absence. Great to hear the families well, & the newest eddition most of all.
I can't see the latest pics cause the filters on these computers, so im assuming by the comments there pretty cool. I had a bit of catch up on your thread bud, been a mixed bag for you hasn't it! your skills have just been sculptured some more, look at it from the positive perspective. you've also had the introduction into the frag world so your now aware of the nature of such things & as sad as your losses are it has A)made you wiser & B) freed up some much needed space.
Well put as always Veriann, I have learned that the setup of the frag tank is much more fun than the tear down! Not as much hype involved in the "I got to clean all this mess up" phase.
I plan to get the following things in line within the next 60 to 90 days. This is a short list of items that I have been slacking on which could come back to bite me someday:
Setup a true automatic RO system. Right now I am just running the RO filters when I need RO, but sometimes I run a bit low on top off water because I forgot to turn it on. So I want to rig up a float control for the RO system.
Actually get off my lazy rear end and get my alarms all setup so that when I have an issue I know about it. This week I cranked up the Kalk doser, must have bumped a plug, and my tank was without flow for 2 hours (no power to power strip) before my wife noticed and called me at work. A disaster waiting to happen indeed!
Start making some of my own food.
It doesn't sound like much, but should keep me busy!
Wow,has it been 45 days since I have stopped by here? I can't believe it. I am actually starting to have time to actually journal and post now. looks like there are some new faces here and some old ones are not around as much.
The tank is doing well, growing like crazy, we are nearing the 1 year mark and have had only a few casualities. I am real haapy about that.
I recently got new bulbs and a new ballast for my lighting. Other than that everything has been going pretty well. The one issue I am having is my PH has been creeping up within the last 60 days. It was in range over the last 9 months, but I am currently reading 8.55 at peak. I am a bit worried, because I have not had that before.
Also, I still don't quite grasp the ALK, CA, PH relationship. I need to dose some Kalk, to raise my CA, but I am afraid that it my move my PH further, is that the case?
Ok, I will get some new pics posted. I figured out my PH issue, it came down to my prbe being out of calibration. New PH after calibration, 8.17. So all is well in my tank with the exception of CA, which I will start dosing tonight.
A bout 7 Months ago Gwen shipped me some corals. She asked if I had any bristle worms. I had never seen any in my tank. Now I have a ton! One is about 1/4" wide and 5" long! Here they are cleaning up one of my huge turbos that happened to be on the suction end of my PH when it kicked on.
