I like that monti cap! I finally found someone in Houston with that as well, but now that I have a new tank to setup I'm going to hold off on purchasing corals until I figure out what to do.

Well, I think the best thing for you to do Is just ship that 76 Gallon you won at MACNA to me. That way you won't have to "Hassle" setting it up!

Duane,

Thanks for the offer, but I'm looking forward to the "hassle" of setting it up! I've started thinking about the design, but that is on the backburner for a bit until I get caught up with DIBS.

wow - so much info... this was a great read... I really learned alot by reading about your experiences.. I really need some info on KALK... I know what it is... I dont understand how to apply it? My Ca readings are about 285... I have been using Kent Turbo Calcium but cant seem to raise the Ca... Is there a simple way to apply Kalk that you can walk me through... I am a simple man!

To be honest I am not a Kalk expert, I can just tell you what I do. Basically I experiemented very slowly with the Kalk. I assume you have watched the Kalkwasser podcast that Rob did, if not go no further until you do. It explains mixing and preparing the kalkwasser. From there I took measurements of the PH, ALK, Hardness (dKH) and CA. None of these levels were real out of range other than the CA, I was low.

I dosed a small amount of Kalk, at night (because it raises PH and PH drops at night), I started with 1 liter that was dosed at 125ml/hr for 8 hours. I dosed that for 2 nights and my CA went from 300 to 350 and my PH went up only .03. I continued to dose that level for 8 more days and my CA levels raised to 450 and my other levels remained within limits.

Now that everything was normal level wise I had to determine what my uptake was. Basically determining how much you use over a period of time. My CA dropped over the next 10 days to 350. So on average I was dropping 35 CA units a day. I could dose a small amount daily, but I choose to only dose about 1500/ml every 10 to 15 days.
I should really dose on a regular basis, but since the Kalk can go bad over a period of time, I choose to dose a large amount over 2 days rather than a small amount over 15. If I take my readings and my CA is 350 or lover I dose, then I test again.
I assume my needs will change, as I am planning to add more SPS corals to the tank.

Oh_ Got it! ... I did see Robs pod cast, but it just left me with more questions... For the life of me, I cant seem to get to move my Ca past 250... All my other readings are within limits... I'm going to try this kalkwasser thing... what did you use to dose the kalk into your tank?... bye the way- I like the pic of the P40 in the background... Im a bit of an aviation buff myself...

Kalk will raise your Calcium, but it will also raise your Alk in equal amounts. If your Alk is normal and your Ca is low, you cannot use Kalk to correct that. You need to use a Calcium supplement or water changes to get Ca and Alk in balance first and then Kalk can be used to maintain them.

What is your Alk level? What units?

Kent Turbo calcium never worked for me either, I was POURING that stuff in, very little increase. Then I made Randy Holmes Farley's recipe and the Ca additive works great!

What kind of salt are u using? Some water changes should get it a little higher.

I use a Medical or peristalic (sp?) style pump, like you would see pumping IV fluids at a hospital. It allows me to measure dosages and shuts off on it's own. I picked it up from a fellow reefer on reef central for $60.

As for the P40 pic, I took it myself at the Dayton International Air show in 2003. I love aircraft and my basement (we call it "the hangar") is full of my momentos and photos.

Here is a closer look at that one,

Here is another one I like from that day,

And here is a photo I snapped while taking a flight on a UH-1 Huey. Doors off and screaming!

But I digress....

I can recommend Tropic Marin's Calcium supplement. I agree with with Brian said, you can't use Kalkwasser to raise your Ca2+ levels. Kalkwasser is great at maintaining proper DH and Ca2+ levels, once you've got them where you want them.

I've been using Tropic Marin for the past two years now - it's easy to use and does raise the Ca levels nicely.
