Christi, fantastic job so far. I would die to have a setup like that, keep up the great work.

just finnished reading the thread to date, nice work RB.
not only is it nice to here everythings in metric form, but thats a project to be chufted with! bravo! judging by the dates posted this tanks still in progress?
im working my way through the members tanks as i can.
hopefully by early next year i can join u people in the literage department with my tank. my other half has at this stage agreed to let me put $50,000 towards a car ive been wanting,(camaro 69based coupe slated for 2009) but i belive $50G still wont cover it, so im thinking i should buy an aussie coupe instead and spend no more than $10G on the complete setup for my tanks.
judging by the dates posted this tanks still in progress?
Veriann - yes, it's still in progress, unfortunately. We moved into our house exactly one year ago (April 2005) and renovated for 3 months. The tank room project began around that time as well, since it was part of renovated the rooms and tearing down walls, etc. Since we've had to spend so much time on other bits and bobs throughout the house, the tank room hasn't had precedence in terms of the order of things. However, we've gotten quite sick of looking at this unfinished piece of room - it's the first thing you see when you walk in the house and we've designed it to be visible from the kitchen, dining area and living room - so you can imagine what an eyesore it is to have this construction work to look at every day. Part of the delay has also been financial...our heating system broke down on New Year's Eve and we've been hesitant to buy the expensive pieces of equipment until we know what we're doing with the heating.
The plumbing is the next project though and hopefully will be done over the next few weeks. We need to get everything from the old tank into this tank so that we can begin renovated the living room (where the older tank is standing).
Good luck with setting up your new tank(s). Start a thread on it as soon as you get going! :-)
i can understand that, creating a liveable house for the family has to take priority when you have little munchkins to look out for.
i will enjoy following your plumbing steps when the time comes!
Before leaving on vacation, we bought a few pieces of equipment!!
3 X Bresslein Aquastar III 1x400W/10,000K
We will keep our T5ballast from the old tank and add it to the new one. We will probably still need to buy one more T5ballast as well.
Two of the 10,000K MH bulbs will probably be replaced with 20,000K eventually. I personally prefer the higher spectrum bulbs.
We also got 3 x Lifegard Quiet1one 6000l/h (1500gph) pumps and 1 5000l/h pump. Two of the 6000 will be used for the closed loop and one for the return. We still have to figure out whether we'll be going with Tunze streams in the display or waveboxes. I need to achieve about 24,000lph (6400gph) within the tank, so the two 6000's won't be enough for this.
Any comments on the Tunze waveboxes or streams? I also have a SCWD that I could hook up somewhere...
I'm also re-posting this picture of the flow design that I had in another thread.
The only changes to this are that we won't be drilling holes in the back wall - we're too chicken and afraid of compromising the stability of the tank. So, we're going to build a hang-on type of closed loop manifold instead.
how much are you going to be short of this figure with the headloss factored in?
I've got to factor in about 2 meters headloss for the sump and about 50cm for the closed loop (I'm going to mount them on the wall next to the tank at a higher level in order to save on headloss). The return will be split between two pumps (one 5000lph and one 6000lph), which taking the headloss into consideration will get me at about 6500lph total for the return.
