75g FOWLR looking to become a DIY monster!

Alrighty then! So here's the deal. I have THE BEST FIANCE IN THE WORLD!

I've been off and on in the fishkeeping hobby as far back as I remember, since getting a nice 20g for Christmas when I was in about 4th or 5th grade. In the 90s I got back into it with a 60g freshwater and then the saltwater bug hit me and got a nice little 30g up in running.

Well a divorce, moving away to finish college and a bunch of moves locally left me with nothing but fond memories and some various equipment not including a tank.

Last Christmas after bluffing me out BIG TIME with comments like, i think fish tanks are a waste of money, my fiance surprised me with a 75g tank and a bunch of little supplies to start a saltwater tank telling me to follow my dream!

I was ready to slam a stand together and get water and fish in there ASAP! Well last time I was in the hobby, the internet really wasn't too available for the beginner you relied on the LFS staff and the occasional hobbiest you'd run into on fish shipment days.

Once I started reading some forums and posts, I learned a few big things:
  1. It ain't cheap
  2. You gotta go slow
  3. Do your homework and get lots of advice!

Well after 1 year and about 3 weeks, my stand is practically built (time and money slowed it down) and I've been able to stockpile some things and am about 3 weeks away from getting it "wet"!

My basic plan is for a 75g FOWLR to start and then maybe a reef down the road. I will be running T5 lighting, an 18g sump under the tank in the stand, DIY external overflow, and a DIY recirc skimmer modeled after the Deltec AP600. I am going to have about 75-100 lbs of rock (mostly base rock with a little LR) and a SSB of about 2 inches.

I know I'm crazy for going heavy in the DIY, but it looks fun and will save a lot of bucks for the critters!

Will keep you posted with pics soon!

Brian

Hi bbl_nk and welcome to TR.

I know that waiting this long must have been tough but the time and research were well spent and will enable you to have a very successful tank.

Man, you just got to love a woman like that. I know because I've been married to one, like that, for 20 years.

You've found the best reef forum junkies on the net.

Carmie, thanks for all the advice you give and the work on the podcasts. I haven't been able to sit in on a live show yet but always get them from iTunes later.

Dick, Thanks! I feel lucky. Lets just say its a two-way street as the nice big diamond ring I put on her finger for Christmas is helping keeping momentum moving

I am hoping to have some pics up soon!

View of Tank from Google SketchUp

OK, I know not everyone is a CAD engineer, but Google SketchUp is a great tool to mock things up. It takes some time to learn, but can be fun and let you get a chance to see it before you put saw to wood.

I made a model of my tank stand before putting it all together. It is desinged for as many simple cuts as possible since I am limited to power hand tools. I wish I didn't live halfway across the country next to my Dad since he has an awesome woodworking shop with table saws, power mitre/chop saw, band saw, planer, jointer, drill press and more that would have made this project come out much better!

So far I am pleased with it. Some minor imperfections but mostly ones that I only see that drive me nuts! Painted in black to help hide some things

Here is the link on Google 3D Warehouse.

PS - If you don't want to install SketchUp, you can view the model through Google Earth and the 3D Warehouse Network Link.

hi,

I saw your post on my tank build and wanted to give you some food for thought. That 18g tall you have may not be able to be drilled. Many of the smaller size tanks have all tempered glass, not just the bottom. I know for a fact the 10g tanks from wallyworld are tempered, that was messy. If you contact the manufacturer of the tank they can make sure the sides are not tempered, if they are tempered and you drill it you will have a pile of little glass squares everywhere. However, if you can drill it having everything outside your sump is a good idea, espically the pump

Thanks PhotoJohn...The tank I have is built by aquarium masters and if my LFS is right (50/50 ringht lol)...then it should be able to be drilled. I will defintiely check with them about it.

I was just looking over PhotoJohn's build and had many similar experiences in building mine. Took me over a year saving up for stuff and getting it done right (or right enough in the DIY world). Here is a quick rundown on what's been done lately and I'll have some pics to share shortly:

**Custom built island stand to be viewable from front and back -- Eventually when we move in a bigger place we'd love to have it fully viewable. I have the front doors done but still need to build the back ones at a later date. Approx dimensions 60"x34"x20"

**Custom built canopy -- With six "feeding doors" three on each side, plus three 3" vent holes drilled into each end for cooling. Was looking to add some mini-louvers but it isn't too bad being open. Need to add some fans in there since I open a couple of doors and prop a floor pedastal fan on my wastebasket to cool it off.

**Got her wet on May 1 w00t!!! -- I didn't have everything I wanted (skimmer, return pump, sump) but wanted to get the biological filter going and cycle her out. Added 60lb of aragonite reef mix, 50lb of lace rock, 15-20 lbs of LR. Added a CUC of 2 emberals, 5 nassarius snails and 10 blue leg hermits on June 1 (ammonia and nitrates at zero then)

**Growing hair algae -- Been getting a little too much algae for my taste, been doing small water changes weekly and adding topoff RO/DI water from home as needed. Nitrates running a little high and may have phosphates but need to pick up a test kit when I get some extra funds.

**DIY LED Moonlight – OK I do have this grand plan of using PWM to dim LED’s and have found a great kit for a DC motor control for about $7 that is PWM and some nifty blue led waterproof bars with 3 LED’s in each for about $3 each. But in the interim, I found an LED light bar in the automotive section of Walmart for $10 (Pilot Automotive LED Light Bar – CZ-152B WK) made to wire into your car’s 12VDC wiring. I have an old power supply for some long-gone piece of electronic gear rated at 12vdc with about 400ma, cut the connector and soldered together the wires and BAMM..DIY moonlight. It had a foam tape backing, so I just stuck it on the ceiling of my hood.

**DIY Overflow -- Picked up a bunch of acrylic scraps on sale for super cheap at Tap Plastics and built a HOB overflow. Was going to drill it was about 75% confidant I could do it OK, but did not want to risk having to buy a whole new tank THe internal box came out pretty nice. Its about 8"x3"x6". Also have the outer box at about 7x3x11" with a divider baffle to keep the overflow tube underwater and not break the siphon. Drilled with a 1" bulkhead and just waiting to get my return pump and skimmer going and will build a Hoffer gurgle buster standpipe to fit.

**DIY Recirk Skimmer -- Have 5" diam acrylic about 16" tall, 3" riser tube and will have a 5" diam catch basin. Still working on it and haven't commited to the entire design yet but will promise to post heavily on this

**18g Tall sump -- Have an 18g tall tank to use as the sump. will look to drill both ends to have the skimmer and return pump sit outside of the unit. Still will have to play with baffle config.

**DIY media reactor -- Looking to build a square media ractor for Phosban or Rowaphos. Flat sheets of acrylic is wayyyyy cheaper than a tube and easy to handle. Should be able to bet a nice setup on this. I saw a great DIY post somewhere....once, but my stupid ass forgot to bookmark it as a fav for future reference!
