Coral Propagation Tank

Hey all,

Just wanted to share with you my latest project that I am working on. I am about to bring a 40G breeder online for propagating corals, to what end I am not sure. Mostly for the fun of it, if I happen to help pay for some new 'toys' all the better. If I actually make some money wow .. that would be awesome, but is way way in the future, if at all.

So my tank is a 40G breeder from AGA (36x18x16), using a ASM-G1x for the skimmer, 2 @ 250W metal Halides, Mag12 for the return pump, Seio M-1500 for a power head (may need more, not sure yet) and a 35G sump. I have already drilled the tank and have the bulkheads in place

I am using 2" pvc for the water going down into the sume and 1 1/2" pvc for the returns. The mag12 will have to pump up about 6' or so, that will give me 900gph, minus the T that I will put in line for the return.

This weekend I built the stands for my frags out of 1/2" pvc, standard eggcrate and zip ties. All readily available from your favorite hardware store.

Am still looking for a 2" 90 degree elbow with threads on the outside, that will screw right into the bulkheads. When those are acquired, I will move the tank into the basement and start plumbing the tank.

Will keep you all posted on how things progress. Questions are welcome and if I happy to get suggestions.

Very nice, I've been thinking about doing this myself. But, then agian I have been thinking about doing a seahorse tank also. Darn you people, to many good ideas lol!
I like the pvc structure nice and sturdy.

Looks like you have a pretty good setup made...a question though, will that be too much lighting? I would think that 2 250's would practically melt the corals? Or am I way off base here?

hey albatros, how do you know what type of tanks you can drill? i have a perfecto tank i wanna drill but am hesitant.

Some glass tanks have tempered bottoms- if that's the case then you can't drill the bottom. Most sides aren't tempered. Call Perfecto and ask if your tank is tempered.

Yeah...don't TOUCH tempered glass with any cutting instrument...you'll be sorry. Especially if it is HIGH QUALITY tempered glass...the more temper, the harder/more impossible (is that a phrase) it will be to cut/drill.

Idea looks like it is coming along great! I hope the coral propagation works out for you!
