Why thank you Dick. "I'm juss call'n it like I sees it." (Old Southern slang term :-) I am always appreciative of folks who take the time to go out of their way to help me. I can't say that enough. You, like a few others here on TR have been there from me from the start. It just plain "Feels Good" to know that I know I can get your help any time! I have no groups here that I am inclined to participate in, so I really rely quite heavily from feedback, advice and the think tank method, if you will, along with my own gathering information and reading and educating myself the best that I can. Perhaps that is why I enjoy TRL Podcast so much, as it helps place me into a living vibrant atmosphere with others here at TR who are dedicated. It's good to know that I am received well, as I am planning on depending on that genius of yours to move me further along! My greatest thanks definately goes to you, Carmie and Bobby. My 3 mainstays in this hobby so far and I look forward to learning from others and I also am planning to be an invaluable source here, giving back to others as I have received. Share the love!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the kind words Lori.

I am really impressed with the difference in your corals. Kind of like vitamins for us.

Up To Date With My Money Pit!

As you all know, I purchased a lighting system back in the end of February. I set it up and only ran the actinics for a couple of weeks until I could get the electrician back out to the house to make sure I could safely run the 2 new ballasts for the two 250w MHs on the outlets that I had. He gave me the green flag and I anxiously fired those puppies up and wowsers...... it blew my socks off. The lighting was incredible as I saw my DT like I'd never seen it before. I was well pleased even though my pocket book was now empty. Things ran great for a while and all of a sudden I had a MH making a buzzing noise off and on and then it just stopped working. I ordered a Reeflux MH bulb as a replacement thinking it was just a faulty bulb and this was the perfect time to upgrade to the deluxe caddie of the MH world. While I'm waiting for the replacement bulb to arrive, next thing I know, the other MH goes out. When the bulb arrives, I pull the hood down and begin to dismantle it so I can replace the bulb. Hmmm, having difficulty with the bulb coming out. It finally comes out and low and behold one end is fried and now some of the ceramic fitting crumbles. What the hey! : Ok, I can deal with this, just another major hurdle in my marine saga. I've dealt with worse issues like the DT stand, the plumbing and repair work.... I can do this. I feel as if I have this black rain cloud hovering above, watching, waiting, scheming. I'm thinking to my self "What next? Will the front panel of glass on the DT blow out flushing 145g of corrosive salt water all over everywhere?"

Alright, I call the manufacturer as the entity I purchased the lighting system through does not deal with warranties on the merchandise that they sell. "How convenient." I get transferred over to the warranty dept and am now listening to someone's audex telling me to leave a message. I left a message and then decided to call back this time telling the individual that answered the phone that I would like to speak with someone who was actually in the office and available to address my issues. I spoke to a gentleman and am pleased with his actions addressing my problem. Arrangements were then made to have my system shipped back to the manufacturer and am now waiting on my unit being repaired or a new system all together. I am miffed about having to pay $55 to have a custom made shipping box made to send this thing back, but am pleased that they were willing to pay the freight for shipping.

Now that the broken lighting system issue is being handled, I'm on my next pressing problem..... temporary lighting. Yes, more moolah. I surf the web and decide that I would like to purchase a 250w MH hang on tank light. Being the bargain hunter that I am, I procrastinate on actually ordering one. In the meantime, the lure of my LFS is as powerful as the mating call of an osprey in spring. I go in and look around and decide to pick up another 45lbs of LR. More rock the better! I now have 170lbs of LR in my DT and fuge. I have been battling to win a zero on the nitrates and have steadily maintained a 10 rating now and perhaps the LR will help. While I'm there talking shop about my lighting saga, it turns out that they had a 150w MH pendant. I act a little interested (My bargaining strategy) and they really want to help me out. (Help me out of the money I still have left. LOL.... J/K as they are very nice folks) I walk out of there with a $310 pendant for $239. I am well pleased.

Well, apparently I am still in the mood to make myself feel better and buying needed upgrades for my tanks will do the trick. I'm off to Super Petz and purchase a hood for my lil 5.5g ghost shrimp tank. One would naturally assume that a bulb would be included with the hood, but of course it's not, so the bulb goes into my shopping cart. Ooooh, there’s filters over there....I decide to put the filter from my feeder fish tank on the smaller tank and upgrade with a Magnum. I love a good Magnum. Yes, they can be a nitrate factory for a person who does not clean them once a week and fortunately I am a faithful servant to my tanks. Ok, a marine addict more like it. I need my salt water fix. Finally throwing some treats in the basket for my cockatiel and dog I head back to the ranch.

Now the waiting game, as I am currently monitoring my water parameters daily to keep an eye on the "cured" LR to make sure I don't get a spike. So far, so good. I sure hope things plain out and I can take 2 or 3 steps forward before I am plagued with another issue. And of course we all know there will be issues of one kind or another.

You are right CJo. I don't think I was bit by the reef bug, more like assalted and mauled to be more precise!

And yes Bobby.... it's all your fault for spending your time in helping me out. And all of the world's problems too! J/K It's just one of those things... if not me then someone else ya know? So I wouldn't feel bad in the least as the system is very good, as I just got a bad one is all.

Unfortunately I do not have room in my sump for a RSB as it already houses my skimmer and two pumps. I forgot to mention that I also purchased a large multi-filter canister system. Marineland's C-360 that pumps 360gph through 4 or 5 trays of filter mediums. I am hoping that this method will work better than the water pouring over my current filter mediums as the canister filter pushes water comepletely through filtering all of it. I'm just wondering how often I need to clean the canister and all the mediums. Not sure on that one. What I was using before, and still am, I clean every 3 days. (floss, carbon, Denitrate, purigen) Like I said.... "The Money Pit"

Long Over Due For An Update

I have been sadly lacking in updating my tank journal here on TR. A lot has happened since my last efforts to update. So this will be an update to my update! I have been plagued with the every day to day common responsibilities, 2 major illnesses so far this year, lightning striking my home, my first grand baby on the way, and now a hand injury. My life is never dull and without constant challenges. My 90 is doing nicely and I am well pleased with my current water readings. They are as follows:

Amonia - 0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 5
Phos - 0
Cal - 460
PH - 8.0
SG - 1.024

Some who may be just viewing this post for this particular system and have not been keeping up with my journal, may feel that the nitrates should be zero. But given the history of my system, from where I was and where I am now, will be quite pleased for me. It has taken months to slowly bring them down and keep them there. "Remember nothing happens fast in a reef tank except disaster!" I continue to do a 30 gallon water change about every 10-12 days or so (total system volume 145g) with NSW, gently shaken, never stirred. J/K I run the two #3 Koralias on an alternate cycle as I do not want too much current disturbing the 2 anemones that reside in my tank. Both are growing well and one is now the size of a dinner plate, so there is concern with them staying well content. I am still dosing with the 2 part Ocean's Blend additive and feel that it has played a major role in stabalizing my PH and bringing my calcium up to a more acceptable level.

Since my last update, my lighting system replacement came back. I changed the MH bulbs out and replaced them with Reeflux bulbs. I am currently running the actinics when I am at work and then crank up the MH when I get home and they stay on until I go to bed around 11:30 or so. I am currently doing a 1-2 gallon top off every morning before I leave for work. My concern about the rising temperature during the hot summer months has been resolved by my present lighting cycle.

I have been wanting to post some pics for quite some time, but ran into a major delima with the docking bay and software program I had been using in the past, due to the lightening affecting my computer. I had to replace an eithernet card in my system, along with a modem. The software refused to work properly so I tried to reinstall it w/o success due to advanced software on the system. It was now obsolete. My daughter gave me a new Sony Cyber Shot for Christmas that I had tucked away, so now I am trying to "acclimate" myself to a new camera with far too many options.

The photos that follows are just a small portion of shots that I have taken over a few days. There was a total of 123 in all. There were just a very few that I was really pleased with, considering my "vast experience and expertise" with taking pictures. So bear with me through this pictoral journey.

Her are a few shots that were taken with just the actinics on. I really love the blue hue effect that is seen in these photos. It's amazing how a picture reflects a vast blue hue to the photos, when In reality, the lighting that is given off does not look anywhere near the blue seen in these photos. The photos remind me of a very large lunar moon light.

The following photo is of some clove polyps, a coral variety that I have always thought appealing due to their flower like appearance and ability to move with a slow current.

A small colony of zoas that currently reside on the sandbed near the front of my tank.

[IMG][/IMG]

The Toad Stool Leather that was one of the first corals purchased for my reef. I simply can't explain my deep affection for this coral and the joy it brings to me.

This Devil's Hand leather was purchased the same time as the Toad Stool. It has really come a long way and is quite beautiful.

And of course my constant companion who oversees my aquatic paradise in my absence, Vandamere. He is quite intelligent, gentle, and I am quite comfortable in working inside of my tank with him. We have a most wonderful relationship. I truly admire this beautiful creature.
