Finally got the new 75g up and running today. I started yesterday afternoon and finally got it all working fine tonight. After putting all my extra dead rock in my 30g with heater and powerhead for about a week. all checked out so i started adding it to the tank. all parameters are at the ideal level.
here are some pics. The first one is a bad pic of the whole tank. The second is a close up of the cucumber i have (can anyone identify it??? species?). He usually hangs out in the rocks but is staying on the glass for now. The third is the pile of LR on the right side. The fourth is my scooter blenny, the only fish in this large tank, lucky guy. And the last one is a banded starfish (anyone know the exact name for these types?).
I was going to use a 30g tank for the sump but didn't have the time or money to modify it. So i used a plexi glass sump that i've had and had to modify it slightly to work better (from things i've learned here, still not perfect but i'm getting there). It's about 25g. So i have the overflow from the tank going down into the right side of the sump from there the skimmer ( a hang on style, the red sea prizm) takes the water and skims it and dumps it over into the middle chamber where i'm starting a DSB. For now i only have an inch or two and a few small peices of LR and some chaeto but will add to that when i can seperate that chamber from the return pump chamber better. From that chamber it flows over to the return pump. For now i just have a peice of plexi there to keep the sand and other debri from going back into the tank. In the tank i have 2 rio 90 powerheads (will get much bigger ones when money permits) and a larger, although not much more powerfull unknown brand powerhead. I seem to have alot of tank flow but will still get a few more powerheads to make sure the whole tank gets some flow. I need to get the hood to make a better place for the lights to sit. I just put in 4 65w 50/50 bulbs.
so thats that, now to let it sit for a few months and let it mature a little bit before adding anymore livestock.
here is a pic of about 5 polyps that i have no idea what they are! can anybody identify these???
i also have about 40 nasarrius snails and a few large turbo snails.
Whats the best way to secure rock? is there and safe glue?
Looks good- you can use super glue gel or epoxy in your tank. Usually for glueing rock to rock- epoxy works best. You will need to turn your skimmer off because it will go crazy after putting that in your tank. For glueing SPS- super glue is the way to go.
You may wanna think about upgrading your skimmer down the road.
I have a much better skimmer that is too big for the sump. when i upgrade the sump to the 30g i will use it instead of the Prizm. Thanks for the epoxy info.
You will want to loosen up that rockwork to allow more flow through your system and you may want to move it off the glass now. It will be impossible to keep that area of the tank clean once it is running and established. You really want to be able to get into those corners to ensure you have good flow, can clean up detritus, and scrape the glass.
Take things slow. There's a lot of "goings on" in that new tank.
the LR actually has lots of channels and open areas within it. i was going to put a closed loop system in to move the water through there. the return will come down the corner of the tank and point behind the rock to get the water movement behind it. I guess you would have to see it in person to notice the open areas behind it. if i don't get enough movement back there i will just move the rocks.
you can post them to the photo galley and then include the bbcode to have them displayed.
when you view an image in the gallery, just below that image you will see a box that says BBCode and then there will be a like of text after it something like this
Code:
[img ] http: // url . com / image.jpg [ /img]
(had to through some spaces in so the forum doesn't treat is as actual BBCode)

here is the Jebo light fixture with 4 Sunpaq 65w SmartPaq 10,000K daylight and 460NM Actinic lamps
here is the tank overflow. Perfecto 75g tank with AGA Megaflow kit. sitting on a AGA stand.
here is the sump in the stand. you can see the Prizm Deluxe skimmer on the sump. the big white hose is the overflow and the smaller clear hose loops around from the return pump and up to the tank. should i make the return hose as short as possible? i wanted to leave some slack. the overflow enters from the right, the skimmer skims it and dumps it over the baffle and into the middle chamber...
where the DSB will be, for now i have a small amount of sand and two small chunks of LR and some chaeto.
and then over to where the return pump is. for now i just have a small piece of acrylic and a small plastic egg crate thing blocking large debris from going into the return pump. i will modify with a much bigger, more secure piece when i get it this week.
once the water dumps back into the tank i use 2 Rio 90 powerheads to move it around.
along with the water return and the Rio's i have this unknown powerhead to create some water movement. i will be purchasing bigger more powerfull heads soon.
i have top off water in a 5 gallon bucket, when i need to top off i use another unknown pump to pump it into the sump.
thats it! for now. here is a pic of my Blenny perched on a rock.
the reason why i have unknown pumps is i was given this equipment along with the 55g tank i upgraded from. He is an engineer and can get his hands on some no name pumps and other equipment. so, i am slowly replacing that stuff with new equipment.
i plan on getting a closed loop system going to get some water moving behind all those rocks. there are plenty of places for water to flow through there.
ok, so there it is. the beginings of a marine tank! very begining!
I uploaded my pics to photobucket before i read your post Rob. thanks for the info, i'll use it next time.
thanks for sharing.. its looking good...
once comment, it looks like you might be lacking on overall water flow..
how much water are you moving all together?

it's a 75g with about 25g in the sump. i plan to get more powerfull powerheads this week and install a closed loop system to get more movement. what powerheads do you recomend for a 75g tank?
the hobby is addicting but going to this site is almost as addicting! the feedback here is great.
there is only one fish in the tank right now, the blenny. along with a black spined sea urchin, sea cucumber, banded starfish, 5 small green polyps, a few turbo snails and about 40 nassarius snails and an emerald green crab. i plan on not getting anymore livestock for a few months. i want to finish getting the equipment and modifying the sump.
