you can use this to your advantage, as its actually a good way to gauge the health. if you put your hand over the tank shading it from the light, it should respond b starting to close, or to close.. they will usually quickly open back up, but can be used to gauge there responsiveness..

Hey Amphibious! Great thread and awesome photos! What are you using to take them?

Also, your clams, how are they doing? I would love to have clams in the future, but I have not even researched anything on them. Do they do well in the reef environment? What, if any, are the special requirements?

Absolute wonders of Mother Nature and evolution. Here's one of them. A slug so ugly he's cute. Consumes his weight in algae every second. Well, at least it seems that way. If there's a mat of algae and he slides through it he leaves a clean path. Amazing!!!

This next one is for you, dreams, enjoy.

A Crocea clam. One of two. The other is laying on his side tonight and I didn't feel like moving the light fixture and getting my arm wet to the pit. There's also a lettuce nudebranch in the pic.

i've heard nudibranchs don't live very long either. usually only a year inside an aquarium.

Yes and no. There are nudibranchs that eat coral but not the Lettuce nudibranch. Actually, nudibranchs as a group are some of the more difficult animals to keep alive in captivity. Most of them die in a month or two by waisting away from starvation. The Lettuce Nudi is supposed to eat hair algae and I had such a beautiful growth of algaes, meaning several kinds, that I thought I'd try them. They go about grazing on the rocks and so far seem to be doing fine. It's been a month since I bought them. AdamJ is right about them being picky eaters. Most should stay in the ocean. Cheng too, is correct. If you get a year out of them consider yourself lucky. Under reef conditions Nudies are not long lived.

Clams are some of my favorite critters. I love the variety and richness of the colors.

Amphibious, i was told that the lettuce nudibranchs are not actually found in the reef but rather in lagoons. do you know that to be true?

there's so different parts of the reef.... you got the mangrove swamps, fringing reef, patch reefs, lagoon, seagrass beds, reef flat, back reef, groove channel, reef crest, and finally the big daddy the fore reef.

and then after that you have different types of reefs either continental, or oceanic reefs. and you talking about diversity in each. but still you will find the same creatures in a little bit of everywhere.

Hi Dick
We miss you up here in Wisconsin. Your tank is looking great, just as I expected. I can't believe you have my three favorite tangs. Good luck with them; if any one can do it, you can. Keep us posted, it's been a very informative thread.
Be good to your self, Sheila:-D

Hi Sheila,

Good to hear from you. Thanks for the kind words.

I meant to post a note before I left FL for a fishing trip to Canada but forgot and left my lap top at home, darn. I'm in Duluth, MN at a motel that has internet service.

So everyone, I'll be incognito for about a week. I'll not be posting until I get back.

Dick
