In cutting the holes in the walls of PVC I use a holesaw. I drill one near each end. For me they serve two purposes. The first, to allow access to the lower depth of sand by the worms and such and second the upper hole makes for hiding places for small gobies.

Hope this helps with your project.

Thanks for the answer and I might even be able to use one of those tricky hole saws. I may be accomplished in some areas, but tools are like a foreign language Kinda scary to think I built my own stand for my 75

is there a substitute for flat pieces of rock to set up the deep sand bed like you did. i have to replace my tank as it is leaking so i want to set it up the way you suggest but i have not found flat pieces of rock like that. so i was wondering if you could use eggcrate or something like that for this application?

You could probably use egg crate but, if I were going to use it, I would either double it or use more pipe stands.

clownfish4me,

Yes they have spread some. I'm amazed at how slow the spread though. Not sure I'm ready to split off a few. I'll take a close look in the am and PM you.

Hi Dick,
Nice thread. Nice Tank. Just read the whole thing. Page 2-3. Somewhere in there when you lost your tangs.
So Sad to hear that. They were beautiful! And then the dreaded evil crab! I had one like that once. He killed several of my fish, when I caught him, I didn't have the heart to do away with him so I set him up in a tank in my sons room, and from that day on, he never would eat again. I guess he only liked LIVE food!!
What happened from Dec. 18, 06 until the latest posts that started again in Oct of 07? Did you move part of this thread? What does the tank look like now?

Thanks Renee,

I'm long over due for an update.

Sometime, after the Dec 18, '06 post I had an outbreak of Bryopsis algae and have been fighting this nemesis ever since. Everything is doing well except for the algae. I have a Sohall and a Desjardini Tang in there but they only pick at it. This vegetable, to them, is like cooked cauliflower to me. Yuk!!! They get feed Nori on a regular basis so ignore the Bryopsis. I think I have the algae under control now. Not gone but greatly reduced. What a pain in the grass it has been.

Dick

You are absolutely correct, Christi. No apology necessary.

Hope things are going well for you. How is your monster reef coming?

it's actually up and running....have just run into a problem with my skimmer not producing (trying to work that out) and trying to figure out how to hook a pH probe up to my Jetstream calcium reactor check here; otherwise, I'll be posting pics soon!!!
