as if someone took a little micro vacuum, and sucked the pigment out of a small circle... real weird..lol

Hey...artistic ability is something that some people have...but that anybody can learn if they have the time. Your first aquascape was probably a pile of rocks...but as you learn to admire more beautiful things, you can learn to emulate them and then apply some of your own "flair" to it. Not necessarily the best flair...but you can learn to train yourself!

My mom is actually a fine artist. She taught people who couldn't draw a stick figure to paint/draw/sketch very well. It is like any skill, you can train yourself, you just need to know how! It's amazing to see the skills that people can acquire if they really really try. (of course, there is ALWAYS someone who just has it, and can show up even the people who practice hard).

Ah....gotta love those soapboxes...LOL... Yeah, I just don't have much spare time to learn (hmm...could that be why I don't have a wife...no spare time...LOL).

But, at some point I'll learn the aquascaping....as all the voices in my head are crying for a larger tank (or at least a second one...even if it might be a nano). But that's in time, maybe this summer.

Just a newbie at this, and it shows. I look at my tank and think of the ways I should have done things...for better flow, etc. Just hate to attempt to redo any of it at this point....maybe in a year or two if I move out of the apartment.

Switching topic back to YOUR tank....you mentioned it's not a 15 gal anymore....but a 10 gal. Are the pics of the rock on the sides on the 10 or 15? I really thought that was neat...and one reason I'm thinking of another tank.

The pics with the rocks on the side are of the 15. All that rock in the original picture is old dead rock. I bought 3 pound of uaniva LR from my LFS, and it was actually enough LR to almost completely aquascape a 10 gallon! SO..there was a LOT of rock, and with the side pieces...the aquascape never turned out right. I could never get it looking right with the "Tall" tank. It needed more front to back depth (Like a 30 gallon oceanic cube). The 10 gallon is now having bowing problems....so...I have a dilemma. I may DIY my own tank today out of the 15 and my old 20 gallon (I have a limited width to work with, so the 20 gallon couldn't be used). Anyway..we'll see how it goes. I'll post some pictures later.

I think you were "thinking outside the box" when you put the rock on the sides, as I would have never thought of something like that. That's the good thing about seeing other peoples tanks....you learn so much and get new ideas of how you might want to redo your own tank, or setup a new one and try something different.

Here's the new tank I just built. I have to wait 72 hours to have it cure...so no water tests until then. I added a center brace to prevent bowing (as i had that problem with the 10 gallon).







The third picture is a macro of the seam to show that there are no bubbles! The glass may not be clean! (I didn't clean that side as well, as it wasn't getting sealed). BUT...there are no bubbles in the seam! WOO HOO for the first glass tank DIY!

Yeah, it was. I used the bottom of the 20, and the front/back of both tanks (with the pieces cut down to size). The tank size is 22*12*14high. It is about 15 gallons.

Great job Jeepjon! I wish I had the guts and the foresight to be able to create my own tank. I'm not gutsie enough for stuff like that! Can't wait to see it in action! :-)

Neither can I...it wasn't really gutsy...I had two tanks laying around...the need for a different size. I had the glass cut by the hardware store...gutsy would have been cutting it on my own! ! ! THAT would have been CRAZY! I plan on building my tanks from here on out (Unless they're massive and it is cheaper to buy one...but I doubt that). It is just too much fun! You see it get created! And then it is easier to make a size compatible with reefing (usually wider than tall...or at least not TOO tall. Most commercial tanks are too tall when compared to the width.) Those are my thoughts..can't wait for it to fully cure (72 FREAKING hours!). Then I do a few days of leak test! (WEEEE)

Probably have the rock transfered into it this weekend!

What was the silcone that you used?

I used GE window and door 100% silly-cone. It is food grade, and many have used this with no problems, so I decided to go for it....have used it in the past, too. Works great. (and about 1/2 the price of 'aquarium' silicone...which is identical stuff).
