My obsession

Obsession- Haunt to fill the mind. (webster's Dictionary) Yea that about sums up what this hobby has become to me. When I first became interested in saltwater tanks my wife was like, "I dont think so, it's to expensive and to much work, and I know you this is just a phase." 6 months later I am still Obsessed with the hobby, and she has come to realize that. It was supposed to be a Christmas present for me but like usual my wife could not hold it from me, and told me that she had gone to my lfs and sat down and talked with them and told them what I wanted. They showed her how they had thier fish tanks setup and walked her through how a saltwater tank works. I really do love my lfs people it's like I found a beautiful gem lol. When I first got into saltwater I was putting my wife through nursing school so money was a little tight, so I could not really afford much. So I did the next best thing, I researched, researched, and researched. Being tight on money was probably the best thing that could have happened to me because if forced me to research. I know everyone likes the big tanks but I looked and looked until I found that the 29 gal. was just what I was looking for in a size. The thing is, is that I dont know what it is about saltwater tanks but I really dont feel the need for the big fish. I just love how there is so much going on in a marine enviroment even to the naked eye. there is a whole colony of life going on that is amazing. The thing is the reefs in the wild are dying at an incrediable rate and I feel it's going to be up to the average hobbiest to keep it alive through just what we are doing now people who have a nack for aniamal husbandry should keep up the good work, because you are really doing your part to help save this delicate ecosystem. Anyway sorry about the raving, I just feel very strong about the subject. So I already bought the tank and the sump, got a great deal on my used sump and well the tank is brand new. My wife for christmas bought me a used overflow box which is huge but hay it's more water volume. She also bought me a pump and a iron tank stand nothing fancy but its sturdy. My parents are giving me cash this year which is sweet, so that should buy my light. Work is giving me my ICP check for like 200 which is based on how well the company did for the year. That will buy me the protein skimmer. I will be starting the cycling of my tank soon. I think I am going with about 2 in. live sand and 2 in. regular. I will be doing a base rock formation and seeding them with some LR. I really wanted to do the whole thing from scratch, because then it seems more real for me, or that I am doing it myself, I cant explain it but thats what I want to do for some reason lol, also going with all LR is kind of expensive. I havent figured out what to put in the sump as far as mechanical filtration is concerned. I no absoultely know bio-balls.

It's been six hours since you posted this. Is there water in it yet? If not you have tons more patience than I do. What kind of tank is this going to be? What skimmer are you going to get?

LOL! Well after not holding back for six months, yea you could say I have developed some patience. Its all about working the wife, you got to know how to say the right thing, and how to make the right moves lol. This is where a question arises. I will have 200$ to play with in about 2 weeks, so should I go with the light or the protein skimmer? I would thing for cycling both would not be real important at the moment and also I am pretty much going from scratch using base rock with 2in agronite dead sand and 2 in LS and sprinkling my base rock with LR. Please tell me what you guys would do. Thanks

I have that skimmer and love it. Your sump look really tall. How are you planning on running the skimmer?

Yea I think I am going to have to hang that one on the tank. Orginally I was going to hang it on the sump, becuase I couldnt fit the skimmer into sump. Plus the bottom of the overflow is really close to the top of the sump which creates some headaches in plumbing lol

What kind of lights are you getting? As far as your sand goes I think that you could cave some $$ by not going 50-50. Are you planning on using the so called LS from a shop or getting some from a fellow hobbyist or 2? I think that you will get a far better product for your tank if you can get a couple of cups of LS from an existing tank.

a few cup fulls would do it? I don't know anyone that has a saltwater tank I could get it from. So I guess I will have to buy it from the lfs. the lights I am not sure of. I will eventually be getting into corals but not for like 6 months. So for the LS I should just go like 5 in. and then put the 2 cups of LS on top?

When you consider how long the packaged LS has been around I am not really convinced that it is all that lively! It won't have the worms, microstars and other fauna in it that you would get from an established tank.

Have you listened to the lighting series yet? I'd do that for sure before buying anything. If you know you want to keep high light kinds of corals you should plan to get sufficient lighting from the get go.

Yea you are right. I did listen to the first 2 shows. Good point on the sand, I never thought about that. I will see what my LFS has they are super trust worthy, I have been dealing with them since I was a kid, plus they are about to get MACNA certified. They have LS and LR in one of thier tanks. If not, is there a website thats crediable that I could buy some off from?

I don't know for sure but it seem to me as if most things that would have to be shipped would have been pre-packaged. If the LFS you have a relationship with has a tank with LS in it they may sell or give you a couple of cups.
