Wes,
They could possibly be what Dr Shimek said, but didn't you also say that your friend goes and dives and collects them in Florida? Can you verify that?
While Dr Shimek is awesome in his knowledge, has has admitted in his message to you and in conversations with me that his knowledge of Nerites is limited. If your friend collects them in Florida it is likely it is another species of Nerite.
Could you get another picture of the snail from the top down? Get a picture of it wet and dry, so we can try to see the detail of the shell.
But the important thing here is you have a cool snail and keep an eye out for egg masses. Nerites are not easy to raise, but I'm hoping we can have some success with them with Project DIBS in the future.
Yea i thought about that. so called him and he wasnt home. im going to try and get ahold of him tomorrow. maybe take one to him to make sure we are speaking of the same ones. Im also going to stop by there and see if there is anymore. I found another type of snail that is from the same family, however it is still from hawaii. I will also try and get another picture tonight when the lights go off. I did forget to add ( and im sorry, completly slipped my mind and it might change everything ) but the snails seem to be nocternal. not sure my water temp stays the same 24 hours a day but they seem to come out mostly at night to clean.. sorry
Now i know this site has probably talked about culturing phtyo more than any other site on the net
If you are reading this and have never cultured phyto before check out the wonderfull audio podcast's and video podcasts
Anyhow i ordered my Phyto and f/2 formula today and im excited to get it up and running. The phyto culture this time around is called Nannochloropsis oculata, or simply nano culture. This is the green stuff most people culture. After i get settled in with the nano i think i am going to culture the Isochrysis galbana. Not sure yet. i havnt read about it and decided if it would benefit me yet.
The f/2 formula i ordered from Seahorse Source isnt the same as the micro algae. It was explained to me as this f/2 formula is what the people use to culture there cultures and then in turn sell the cultures to Seahorse Source. Dan from seahorse said this stuff is great and that if i would of ever used the micro algae stuff i would like the new f/2 formula better, we'll see.
About two months ago i tried my hand at phyto for the first time with miracle grow. The cultures were going very well. I was splitting the cultures about ever 5-6 days, however due to a very high temp change the culture crashed and i didnt restart the culture. I told dan from seahorse about my experience and he said that the f/2 formula grow alittle slower which in turns creates a more stable culture. Once i get my new pyhto up and running i think im going to start a MG culture and compare the two. I have wanted to get both cultures under a 800x microscope but due to local lab time at the university i havnt had a chance yet. but im still working on it Well i will keep my journal updated and the project goes on.
I will have my culture up and running this weekend and i will be posting pictures.
Recently I visited Project DIBS and i really liked what Brian was wanting to accomplish, so i decided to try my hands at breeding Dibs Turbo snails and Mini Star Fish. I received my first shipment on thursday. If you are interested check out my Breeders Journal
Oh yea check out Project DIBS too while your there.
OK, i had to take a few things out of my tank friday and of course i had to take out all my rock to capture the creatures. I found this all over my rock. I only have two peaces of live rock and the rest is reef rock, or maybe live rock by now. but i probably have about 10 patches of this stuff on every rock. Does anyone have any ideas to what it is?
I just wanted to show how fast these frogspawns can grow under the right light..
This picture was taken a little over a month ago..
This picture was taken today. both near the same time and both fully extended.
The thing about this frogspawn and im not sure if its how they all act. but it took awhile for it to show signs of growing. I cant really remember how long i have had it but i just recently started noticing growth.. I do love this coral..
