Perhaps a bit too much on target ... and depressing!

lol, thats ok D, i know you didn't want to bust out in the presence of Rob...lol
besides, gives you something to aspire to change in 3 months, & the only thing that came for free that was even remotely linked to the tanks..

Look who's hanging out in QT

Well, I've been meaning to post these pics for some time now, but I've got 3 new additions to my 46 fish quarantine tank. They are:

Cirrhilabrus bathyphilus (Coral Sea Fairy Wrasse - Male)
Cirrhilabrus bathyphilus (Coral Sea Fairy Wrasse - Female)
Cirrhilabrus laboutei (Laboute's Wrasse)

The've been in QT for almost 3 weeks now - and are in perfect health. All are eating well, especially the male Coral Sea, who eats everything I put in the tank. One more week and it's off to the 180 FOWLR. As much as I would love to add them to my 240 reef, I just can't because the tank has two large openings that are not covered, and I've already lost a Scott's Fairy Wrasse that way. (The day I discovered him under the tank was one of the most depressing days I've had as a fishkeeper.)

I can't cover the openings until I get better lights, which I plan to do when I upgrade to LED early next year. Until then, they can hang in the 180, which is completely covered.

Sorry for the quality of the photos, these guys (and gal) would not pose for me!

Oh yes, especially the ones that come from deeper waters (like the Coral Sea pair.) They scare very easily and tend to quickly pick an escape route, including straight up. I've already witnessed the male dart strait up and hit the cover of the QT tank. He sat dazed for a few seconds ("when the hell did the sky get solid?") but was none for the worse. And it beats finding him hours later on the floor.

Well, I am sad to report that the Laboute's Wrasse did not make it. There were no signs of disease. 3 days ago I found him resting on the bottom of the QT tank. He still ate, but would return to his resting place. The next day, he was still there, but was now breathing rapidly and would not eat. Yesterday he was on his side and breathing very rapidly. It was obvious that he was not going to make it. Rather than let him continue to suffer, I thought it was best to act. My chosen method of fish euthanasia is by freezing, and this is what I did.

To be safe, I did a quick check of the QT water parameters, and they are all normal. I guess it was just one of those unknown things.

The Coral Sea Wrasses are still doing great, and did not pick on the Laboute's one bit, even as he lay dying. I'm going to keep them in QT for a few more days and make sure they are OK before moving them into the 180, but so far they are looking great.

I am sorry about your fish. I am always frustrated when they die for no apparent reason.

Wow! Has it been a month since my last post here? It seems like it was last week!

240 Reef Update

All is well. I recently added three Montipora digitata frags that I picked up a month ago (they spent 2 weeks in QT first) and can't believe the growth I am seeing. And under PC lights! One is green, one is orange, and the last is purple. The purple looks more brown, though when the polyps retract, it is completely purple. The purple (brown) specimen is growing the fastest. Makes sense, he's closest to the lights.

I also added an Orange Brittle Star 6 weeks ago. I has almost forgot about him, until one night during feeding he came sliding out from a rock. He is very light shy, but has finally figured out that if he sticks an arm out during feeding, I will occasionally give him a piece of food. He is the most brilliant orange. It's a shame he is so nocturnal.

I had a frightening event happen last night. I was feeding the fish (hand in water holding food, fish eating from hand) and I heard a splash, flop, flop sound. Lo and behold, one of my Anthias was laying on the top of the tank, inches away from one of the canopy fans and certain death. A quick sweep back into the tank, and all is well. I guess I must have startled him while feeding. I'm not sure who was more freaked out, but I'd guess it was the fish!

I've also included a photo of the green hydnophora. I can't believe how fast this guy is growing as well.

180 FOWLR Update

This tank is moving right along. I recently added a beautiful Flagfin Angel. I wasn't sure if I would ever try another, but this guy (gal) just called out to me. He's a bit large (5") but seems to have fully adapted to tank life (my LFS had him for a month) and he eats EVERYTHING. I am making sure he gets lots of sponge and algae based foods.

I did have one set back. My true Falcula Butterfly (a somewhat rare fish) stopped eating and a few days later was dead. He had been in the tank for about 2 months, and was in QT for another 4 weeks prior. He also ate everything. Once again, I checked all water parameters, and all is fin
