Exclamation my water in the 50 is murky and green

my 50 gallon is developing a green murky look. i increased the water movement, and put the airation tube in the power head, and im putting air in the water with it. i need to buy pvc, and this sunday i am going to build my sump. will the overflow, and sump with a skimmer in it get rid of the green fog?

You're going to have to give us more info before anyone can answer that question. Like... current water parameters.

Ammonia
Nitrite
Nitrate
pH
Alk
Calcium
Magnesium
Phosphate
Salinity
Temp
Filtration method
What lighting system?
How long are the lights on?
What critters are you keeping?

All the above play some role in the outcome of your system. We need that info to figure out what happened.

Are you running any carbon? Carbon will help to polish water to a nice clarity. Sounds almost like you have an algae bloom going on. Are you overfeeding? Nutrient in the water will help to feed this type of bloom. Also what types of macro algaes are in the tank? Something may have gone "sexual" and release spores in the tank. Again some heavy filtering with some floss or pads changed often and carbon also changed ofter will help to clear whatever it is.

Hope this helps a little.

ill run the water testing in a little while, im on my way out the door. filtration is usualy a hang on tank magnum canister with carbon that gets cleaned every three days, but right now i took out the bilogical filter and put in a polisher filter. lighting is one 250w MH timed to be on twelve, off twelve. critters are as follows:
2 individual heads of trumpet coral
1 very small colony of big green button polyps (5 heads)
1 one inch long piece of finger leather
1 strawberry dottyback
2 snails

What was the last thing you did to the tank? Add anything new? Added or deleted a piece of equipment? Skipped a water change? Also might be good to know if you strayed from normal via a change of some sort.

Yup, it sounds like you have a phyto bloom. People deal with it in different ways. One being to block it with light so it will crash. I don't like the idea of anything crashing it my tank so I don't adovate this method....... stuff dyign is an O2 vaccum.

If you keep changing water it can be like you are harvesting your phyto culture every day which can envourage it's continuation instead of letting it sit and crash naturally.

But like I said, I'm not a fan of thecrash, either by invertening or choosing not to, so I like to filter. A nice diatom filter will help remove the phyto.

These really aren't sutainable cultures like a pure phyto culture. There's critters in the water that are actively consuming them.

i put the sump in today, its running through a ten gallon till sunday, when the 55 gallon arrives. i figured out what the problem is i think. the timer was set wrong so it was on from five in the morning till nine at night. so it was on 16 hours a day! i work nights so i am gone from two pm till one am and go straight to bed. i didnt even think to check the timer untill i was down there building the tubing for the sump. i also got the skimmer going.

That is a plan. Your corals probably only need about 6 hours a day of light.

i would like to run it about ten because thats usualy how long someones home/awake to look at it. i dont want to have spent all this money to look at it under lighting for 6 hours a day. so ten should be ok right?

10 hours will be fine. I would still run heavy on the filter material, floss - pads whatever and run carbon too.
