OK, that's pretty straightforward. The maxijet feeds water into the skimmer, and the small airline tube held on by the rubber band is the airline intake. The pump will suck air in through it and chop it up, injecting the air and water mixture into the skimmer. The water height in the skimmer is adjusted with the ball valve (blue handle). When it's in the sump, you need to make sure the top of the drain tube is above the water, or you will not be able to adjust the water height. You'll want to adjust the level so the water/air mixture is at the top of the skimmer tube (roughly where the red line is here) The skimmer will take a couple of days to break in, and then you can adjust it to skim wetter or dryer as you prefer. Higher water level = wetter skimmate, lower water level = dryer skimmate.

no ... its not a problem. IMHO, you can not overskim a reef tank.

I agree that you can't overskim, AND, IME skimmers are only good for about half their rated volume anyway.

You can clean it by sticking it in a bin (like a Rubbermaid Tote) of water with a cup or so of vinegar and running the pump.
