What is this stuff?

These started out as small patches but it is starting to cover a lot of my live rock. What is this stuff? The green stuff doesn't seem to be spreading as fast as the red stuff, but they are both spreading.

Do I want this stuff? If I don't want it, what can I do to get rid of them?

thanks,

Jerome

I have some of the first stuff. I was told it was ecncrusting sponge by someone, but I'm pretty sure it's some kind of algae. I siphon it off when I can. It can grow quickly at times.

The 2nd also looks to be some kind of algae, or perhaps cyano, can't really tell from the photo.

I don't think that the second is cyano. It looks like some kind of macro. All of my books are buried. I'll try to dig them out and see if it is in any of them.

first pic looks like Lobophora sp. which is a type of scroll algae. this algae doesnt usually live long in our systems. you should see it slowly die off. the other i cant really tell. may be some kind of Hypnea sp.

It kind of looks like Hypnea sp. Should I try to get rid of it? What should I do to get it off the rocks and out of the tank?

thanks,

Jerome

i dont have any experience with Hypnea sp.. chances are its like a lot of macro algae, it will need to be pruned often, or it will take over the tank.
