The past two weeks i have been dealing with a severe case of ich in my BC29 reef tank. So far i have tried a round of the reef safe ich treatment "kick-ich", metronidazole in the food, and raising the temps to 82 degrees F.
Despite my efforts my royal gramma and midas blenny have disappeared and are presumed dead, the only fish left are my pair of Oscellaris clowns and they are completely infested. My question is, will a UV sterilizer help my problems and whats the best model/make for my size tank? Are they normally interal components or do they fit outside the tank? Id like to be able to just put it in my back filter chambers if possible.
last question, in the mean time, should i start another round of kick-ich?
at this stage, i dont think so.. i would treat the whole tank wt medication. the UV can help but wouldnt be the primary source of fighting ich at the moment.
plus hooking Uv up now would provided another conduit for spores to inhabbit, robs on the money, rip the tank apart if you have to, but get them to a QT asap so you can interupt the life cylce & nuke the fish with hard ball medications
iono if this will help, i treated ich for my FW tank 2 years ago. i did a water change everyday and the temp was in the mid 80. man it was so sad to see my blood parrots literally LIE on top of each other and breathing heavily. thanx goodness they got over it.. what a heartache to see them get sick.. but they are amazing. man they were looking at me wt the saddest eyes ever =\
I agree with rob, add them to a hospital tank and use copper. I would also suggest having a lower sg 1.010, this and the copper will do you good hth.............SHaun
I personally do not recommend this to anyone since it borders on torture for our little fin friends. But I have a seperate hospital tank set up with a 16 watt UV sterilizer and I also add copper doses daily and conduct water changes daily while lowering the salinity to 1.00 I have managed to cure ick rather quickly and save a few of my fishes lives in my old FOWLR days. IMO Raising the temp is an old Freshwater habit that doesn;t work in our saltwater realm.
well thats old news for me now thank goodness. The tank was fishless for 6 weeks and then i put in my seahorses which have been in there for 2 weeks with no ich in sight. thanks for asking.
