Current USA 436 Watt T5 High Output Lighting Too Much?
Hello everyone, I recently installed a Current USA Orbit Extreme 436 watt T5 High Output Lighting System so that I could convert my Fish-Only to a Reef and start collecting some Corals. I have added Yellow Polyps which for over 2 weeks have not fully bloomed. I though it may be an issue with water quality and I check my parameters:
I thought that maybe the coral did not survive the transport from the Local Fish store and the acclimation into the tank. So I purchased another coral which after 4 days is also acting the same way. They are currently located within the middle of the aquarium and being exposed to about 9 hours of 436 T5 lighting with Actinics could this be to much? I have shortened the photo period to 6 hours in hopes that this would help them. What else could I be doing wrong? I really want some color within my tank.
i would also like some input on this system....as i am considering it for my tank....110g high (it is in my shopping cart ready to go, unless i get a thumbs down)
i am very new, but maybe if you placed them on the sandbed & give them time to accliiate to the new lighting?.....then, move them to the spot you want them to stay
ZeroKoolNYC, how are they acting? and what kind of flow do you have?
I'm actually just getting into the swing of things when it comes to a Reef Aquariums and I'm very sorry to announce that I don't understand how to measure the amount of flow within an Aquarium. However, I have done some homework and have come to a personal conclusion that my water quality is not the issue causing them to shrivel up. I contacted the store and to my suprise and fault they were holding the corals within the tank that I purchased them from under 136 watt Power Compact Lighting. Since I didn't properly acclimate them to the 436 watt T5 High Output Lighting I believe that this is the cause. I have since then relocated them to the bottom of the tank this morning. I came home around 4:00pm and to no suprise they are starting to open up every so slightly. I'm hoping in a couple of days they will bloom fully. If I missed anything please drop a comment. Thanks for all your help.

Zero- if you would like to measure the flow in your tank. Here's how you do it:
Calculate the total flow of all of your powerheads within your display. Then add the volume of the return (I'm not totally familiar with how your tank is set up). These two numbers together would add up to make your "flow" within your tank.
However, "turnover" is the volume of water that's passing through your sump. This should be the volume of your return pump.
Many of us try to aim for 15-20X the volume of the tank for the "flow" within the display. You want to have your "turnover" much less, around 5X or so, so that your skimmer can be as efficient as possible.
