Hey there all,
Just today i picked up a 250-watt Mh fixture from my uncle. For free may i add (he has many multi-millionaire buddies with the 15000+ gallon tanks, he has the hoookups). Anyhow, one of his friends had no use for this light and gave it to him, who, not having any aptitude towards reef tanks, gave it to me.
It is an older light but the bulb is in perfect working order and the fixture itself works fine. The only thing is there is a fan on the side that was never completely installed. The whole is drilled, it is secured, yadda yadda.
However, The wiring is not properly installed and i was just wondering where exactly it should be put in. I included a BASIC lighting diagram and can provide more answers upong request (took it apart not-20 minutes after getting it to take a look at the wiring ) unfortunately my dog chewed through my moms camera wire (i have to fix) and my brother took his camera camping with him so i have no working cameras at the moment
no, i just got the fiture not an hour ago, and i dont really know what that is, basically what happens is two wires come from the ballst, one goes to the wall the othr goes through the fixture and splits into 4(i think) and powers the light
sorry, the diagram was too large to upload
those sound like the 120 wires.. there should be a 12volt supply somewhere but i wouldn't know where to begin, and if there is just one to the wall which splits to 4 then it doesnt sound like there is. if you want a quick and easy fix find a computer power supply or a 12volt converter. hook up the two wires on the fan to the power supply then just make everything look all nice and neat. also you might want to make sure there isnt a circuit board on the fan and that the fan is 12volt or less should be 12 anyways. wish i could help you more..
also i am sure you are aware but be carefull if in fact the 12 volt wires get hooked up to 110 then the coating on the wires are going to burn off and you will have a very bad experience. dont want you to get hurt
ok as for the 125 ma i think means milla amp which should be ok for the 12volt. before you finish everything do a test run. if the power supply is 12volt then it wont hurt anything it might just blow the fan..
i would push the airflow out. my power compacts came with the fans facing in but i turned them around. i dont think it makes a big diference either way. makes more since to push hot air out not pull warm air in...
usually i have seen the lights protected by glass or plexiglass and then you can have a glass top or go topless...
alright update time, fan wires are soldered and have been shrink wrapped, light works and has a beautiful blue tone. All thats left is to find someone who sells hammertone to replace this alluminum foil-like reflector, and not even the shiney side of aluminum foil, and hang it over its new home (a freshie for the time being, im picking up a skimmer and pump wednesday but them am going on vacation.
Look to see my new tank journal sometime after the 23rd
The ma is milliamps that is the amount of current the fan draws while running, the power supply has to have the same or higher number (not including anything else running on it.) You still need to make sure that the fan is 12 volt. It doesn't have a number followed by a "v" or the word "volts." If there is no transformer with the fixture, the fan might be 120 volt AC.
no problem but like m8298 said make sure its 12v. sorry just dont want you getting hurt or burning something down. actually do a test run in the yard with a extension cord. and i dont know if the fan has been replaced or something when you do the test run make sure the fan is running normally and not slow or getting ready for lift off. if its really loud buy a 12volt fan good luck
update number two, reversed the fan, and cut holes in the heat shield (there was NO WAY for the air to get out as the fan area was sealed seperatley from the lamp)
and after running for about a half an hour, there was no heat outside of the canopy compared to no holes and fan blowing air out.
But anyhow all is good, now im just plotting about how to kill the FW fish inhabbiting the tank that this light will eventually be going on (jk.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Just Kidding" class="inlineimg" />)
