Moving and Upgrading my Tank

So I have been into SW for about 2 years now and I'm getting ready to move. I currently have a 45 gallon tank and at the same time as the move i will be switching to a 92 gallon corner. my question is what would be the best method of switching from the one tank to the other? when i ask my LFS they give me two options to save all the water, LR, LS, and top of with new water to make up the difference, or to setup the 92 and let it cycle through. From your experiences what would the the best method?

Thanks for any help and advice,
Thomas

if it was me i would get new sand and any extra rock u need for the new tank then add 1 or 2 cupfulls of sand to the new stuff to seed it and let it cycle . after the cycle was over then i would move over the old rock and critters then do whatever u like with the old sand

I downsized but concept is the same

I did a similar thing except I went from a 90G to a JBJ Nano 28G HQI. If it were up to me I would read Dick's (Amphibious) post Amphibious' 135 gal Reef. He is one of the most knowledgable people I know in the hobby.

Wet/Drys

In my opinion wet/drys are okay if you are going to do a fish only tank. If you plan to add any corals you may want to consider adding a refugium or converting the wet/dry to one by replacing the bioballs with LR.

I just setup a new 125L closed-loop system with a DSB in the main display, LR, 55G refugium with LS-Mineral mud, Venturi 250 skimmer, T5 lighting, etc.

Here's my post - http://www.talkingreef.com/forums/ge...osed-loop.html.

Hi Thomas,

I guess the first question is are you going to be in a position to get the 92 cycled while your fish are in your current tank? As far as the rock goes conventional wisdom says that if you move the rock out of the tank it will cycle. However, it is possible if you were to put the rock in tubs with water and move it from one location to the other it would be OK. I say this because when I started my tank I used all rock and sand from an established tank and I never had a cycle. Then a year later, I moved my tank from one room to another and had to remove all the rock and never saw any blips in my parameters.

thanks carmie and yes the tank is currently at my parents and i will be moving in a week or two and could leave it as long as it takes, im not worried about that as i work out of town every once in a while and my brother takes care of it now. as for moving it i could put it in cooler or tubs and that would not be a problem, but what about the water should i keep it also or get ride of it?
