Are skunk cleaner shrimp aggressive towards fish?

I woke up this morning to my first casualty I found my new occelaris clown being eaten by my cleaner shrimp. I didnt think that the shrimp was that aggressive. I dont really know why he died. He was eating well, and my tank params are good when i checked them this morning. It just make me really sad as that was my first fish .

I wonder what could have happened

I never had one of my shrimp attack a fish unless it was dead.

I am sorry that you lost your clown. How long had he been in your tank?

I was going to say the same thing. Shipping stress can affect fish and take a little while to catch up with them. Was it tank raised or wild caught?

Well, that means it was probably handled with care on the way to the store. How did you acclimate him?

Back the first of March I lost BOTH of the clowns in my nano on the same day. I don't have a clue what happened. They had been in the tank for months and were fine the day before. All of the corals and inverts were fine. I am telling you this just to say that sometimes we just don't know why a fish dies.

As long as you did not see any spots or odd looking patches on him before he died I would say wait a week or so and then go ahead and add another fish.

Thanks I acclimated him over the course of an hour using the drip method. Also he did not seem to have any spots or anything on him last night while i watched him swim before I went to bed. Everything seemed fine. That is what made it kind of discouraging. I wll wait a week or so for another fish. Hopefully all is well in the tank until then. My corals seem to be doing well and the crabs, snails and shrimp seem to be doing well.

Hopefully it is more of a fluke than anything....

I prefer the drip acclimation method as well. Don't be discouraged. It sounds like everything is "right" in your tank so it was probably one of THOSE things.

Poor little guy - he just found out american idiol judges are slated to be the intruders on the next big brother in a segment called Monday night Sumo Sage Wrestling.

plenty of reasons or causes bud, if you cant find one, make one up.

*Im not up with a stocking list, shrimp & nemo? (sounds like a cool dish)
*Anything else effected?
*Nothing you have played with prior to that night, nothing on the hands, no spraying in the house with domestic goods ect ect.
*You didn't have Jaws playing on the TV did you - that will do it every time!
*Flow Input & outputs, heaters ect ect, no chance of environmental impacts?
*intestinal worms...? yuk!

Look reality is unless you get him/her on the opperating table & examine him/her alot closer its like clutching at straws & taking pot shots or an educated guesses based on info provided.

Last but not least, If he lives in an anem, considering how much & how little we actually know definativly about the relationships, if an anem continues to sting they may very well suffer in the same way we humans do - toxic shock! - Even though more often than not a white streak is visable when they sting the body bad enough in my experiences.

Nothing else has been affected all seems well still. I took some water to the LFS and had him test it. Everything seemed fine. He advised me to watch the tank carefully for a few days at night. a drop a little food to the bottom and see if I could have a mantis shrimp or some other type of predator. But I didnt find anything. All water params are good still. So This coming weekend I think I will try getting another fish. Hopefully I have better luck the second time.... Thanks for the help.

Daniel, I see by your profile that your experience with marine aquariums began just a month or so ago. That leads me to ask you a few specific questions.

1. What is the size of your aquarium?
2. What filtering method do you employ?
3. What is the specific gravity of the water?
4. What is the pH?
5. What is the Ammonia level?
6. What is the Nitrite level?
7. What is the Nitrate level?
8. What temperature does the tank run?

When we know the answers to these questions, maybe we can better answer your question as to why the clown died.

Thanks,

Dick

Hi dick, I just got done reading your thread on the aquaculture Mansion very impressive.

Yes I am very new to the whole reefing hobby, although I have been reading all the threads here at TR and have learned a lot.

But let me answer your questions.

1. Its a 29 gallon biocube with a 70w MH modded into the hood,

2. the second chamber is full of
