Help - Hippo Tang Question

Help! I am so very new to this forum - like tonight - because after talking to my "fish" people at several local area pet stores - I still can not find the answer to my question:
Why has my Hippo Tang lost its color? The black stripe down its side is now a light grey almost transparent? We feed him frozen shrimp, flakes, and we just started him on a sea veggies. We have had the fish for almost 9 months and he eats fine and is growing but just losing his color. Thank you!

welcome adway

Tangs are funny buggers, temperamental at the best of time.

answer these few questions please bud & post a pic so we know what we're looking at if you can.

How old is the fish, (not how long you had him)
type of greens fed?
are you running activated carbon?
did you change a location of circulation or rockwork?
have you detected any rouge voltage in the tank?
any other new edditions in the last week or so?
beside the colour fading, is the temperment normal?

try that, gives a good base to eliminate causes. Others will jump in soon with input

Feed plankton, krill, and shrimp. Hippo Tangs are not quite the herbivore that some are led to believe.

Thank you for your help ..
I don't know how old he is....
he is about 3.5 from nose to tail tip - i should say - he is only losing his black color around his face and side stripe - the blue and yellow are still vibrant. I do have a pic...not that good but I will see if I can upload it.

Your picture is not very good but, I'd say your tang is suffering from HLLE. Lateral line erosion which can be reversed with proper diet. If the Sea Vegies don't make a change in a couple of weeks I'd recommend you get some Nori at your local Asian food store. If you can't find it I have some I'll mail to you. PM me if you need it.

Hi AdWay, to TR.

I agree it looks like HLLE. I'd also recommend soaking all the food in vitamins. Adult brine shrimp is not very nutritious so that may be part of the problem too.

AdWay,

Here's a link to a couple of pictures showing the dramatic change in health of a Purple Tang I purchased a few years ago. The LFS owner and I made a bet about curing HLLE on that Tang. Here's the link - Purple Tang - Check it out.

Good Luck!!!
